As technology continues to shape how youth spend their time, screens often take centre stage. While online entertainment can be engaging and even educational, striking a balance between screen time and outdoor activity is essential for healthy development.
At YMCA Calgary, our Esports program is built on more than just gameplay. We take a holistic approach, helping youth develop in-game skills alongside physical activity, mental wellness, and digital literacy. Whether indoors or outside, we’re creating spaces where youth can grow, belong, and thrive.
When guided and intentional, screen time can be a powerful tool for learning, creativity, and connection. In our skill building Esports programs, youth sharpen their critical thinking, build teamwork skills, and learn to navigate digital spaces safely and confidently. At the same time, we know the benefits of unplugging. Outdoor play boosts physical health, improves mood, and fuels imagination. That’s why our approach combines gaming with real-world experiences, helping youth find balance, build confidence, and stay active.
Supporting Balanced Play at Home
Balancing screen time with active play can feel overwhelming, especially with so many options available to keep kids entertained and engaged. With competing demands and limited time, it can be hard to feel confident that you’re striking the right balance. Some ideas to try as a family may include:
- Create Clear, Flexible Routines: Creating a clear and organized schedule can help you keep track of your kids’ activities and can also help your child understand the importance of screen and outdoor time.
- Model Healthy Habits: In order for your kids to follow a healthy lifestyle plan, it is very important that you do the same. Demonstrating your own screen restrictions is crucial, while highlighting the positive side of outdoor play. It is important to show them how you utilize your time and make the healthiest choices for your minds and bodies.
- Encourage Alternatives: One of the best ways to support healthy screen habits is to offer engaging, meaningful alternatives. Kids are naturally curious and open to trying new things and sometimes they just need a little spark. Think simple and fun: bike rides with friends, backyard games, trips to the pool, creative projects, or exploring a new trail together. Community events, library programs, and spontaneous outdoor play can all create memorable moments that keep kids active, connected, and learning.
- Encourage Choice and Independence: Give kids the power to decide how to spend their time but lead with some direction. Allowing them to choose their activities enables them to build confidence and self-assurance.
At YMCA Calgary, we prioritize the health and well-being of children across Calgary. Our Esports program offers a diverse alternative to other summer programs and provides children with a positive, supportive environment to explore online gaming.
