YMCA Calgary is committed to providing an aquatic environment where individuals from all cultural and religious backgrounds are comfortable participating in activities in and around the water. We want all members and patrons to feel safe and welcome at our facilities, and therefore utilize the non-traditional swimwear policy as outlined.
Underwear policy for swimming
- Underwear is not permitted as swimwear in the pool area, as the visible layer. Another layer must be worn over top. If you choose to wear underwear, it must be covered by the second outer layer. Additionally the underwear and outer layer must be different from what was worn into the facility.
What is permitted
- Pants and long-sleeved shirts, tee shirts and shorts with undergarments or swimsuits worn underneath.
- Traditional cultural clothing (e.g., saris and hijabs) with a swimsuit or undergarments worn underneath. For safety reasons, patrons should be aware of how different materials become heavier in the water and may be asked by a lifeguard to remain in the shallow end.
- Religious paraphernalia is accepted in YMCA facilities, including, but not limited to, jewelry, kirpans, clothing or coverings, etc
What is not recommended
Heavy material clothing (jeans, sweatpants, absorbent materials, etc.)
Why? - Wearing heavy and everyday clothing in the pool is not safe and not recommended. These materials are not designed for aquatic activity. It can create a serious risk for the swimmer and the facility.
Clothing that restricts movement
Why? - Wearing tight or restrictive clothing in the pool can pose several safety and comfort concerns. For the well-being of all swimmers, it is important to choose swimwear that allows full movement and is designed for aquatic activity.
To ensure that our aquatic environments are safe and free from any external contaminants, all participants are required to:
- Change into clothing that is different from the clothing worn to the facility (i.e., “street clothes”)
- Take a complete cleansing shower (while clothed in the swim attire that will be worn in the water), before entering the pool.
- While in the pool area, participants must wear bottoms. Tops are the participants’ choice
