From Grief to Community: Rob's YMCA Comeback Story

At YMCA Calgary, we are passionate about creating moments that bring people together and spark transformation. For Rob, one of those moments began with a simple invitation that changed everything.

Rob’s story with the YMCA began in 1995 in Fort McMurray. He walked into the local YMCA and saw a step class was in full swing.

“I could not believe the joy I felt,” Rob shares. “So I started to become an instructor, and for six years I enjoyed the beautiful community of the YMCA.”

But like many journeys, Rob’s life took a difficult turn. He lost his mother to dementia, and just three weeks later, his sister to ovarian cancer. The sadness that followed was overwhelming and eventually turned into depression.

“I disconnected from the community,” he recalls. “For two long decades, I felt separated without a neighbour, without community, lost in my own grief.”

During that time, Rob was also facing multiple health challenges including diabetes, coronary artery disease, and back injuries. He was so discouraged that he had even written his will.

Then Rob faced the sudden loss of his niece, leaving Rob and his wife as guardians of two young children. In his pain, Rob started to find meaning. “My life suddenly became full of purpose—but I wanted more,” he says. “When they went to work and school, I was left again alone and sad.”

That shifted when a friend reminded Rob that he used to be an instructor at the YMCA. Rob was scared, but eventually he approached Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge and began teaching again.

“Lorelei Waters, she runs a robust fitness program here in Calgary at the YMCA,” Rob shares. “She approached me and said ‘Rob, I noticed you. Would you like to teach for the YMCA?'”

For Rob, that invitation was his turning point. Lorelei introduced him to his mentor, Michelle Green, from Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton. From there, his life began to change for the better. He regained his confidence, his health, and his sense of belonging.

Today, Rob teaches 10-12 fitness classes a week across YMCA Calgary’s locations, meeting staff, new friends, and new members along the way.

“The YMCA has influenced me greatly,” he reflects. “I stand here today as a proud YMCA instructor, and I cannot thank each and every one of you for the role that you play. Thank you so much.”

YMCA Calgary is more than a place to stay active. It's a place to reconnect, rebuild, and feel part of something. Sometimes, it begins when someone sees your effort and takes a moment to invite you in. Rob’s story is a reminder of the impact that simple acts can make, because growth often starts with a small gesture, a question, or with someone reaching out.
