Celebrating National Indigenous History Month 2026

National Indigenous History Month 2026
June 1, 2026

Each June, we come together to recognize National Indigenous History Month—a time to honour the history, cultures and traditions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples across Canada.

At YMCA Calgary, we are committed to creating spaces where everyone belongs. We are proud to work with Indigenous youth, families and Elders through programs that support cultural identity and foster connection. One of the most meaningful examples of this commitment is our Indigenous Drum & Dance program, a culturally grounded, Indigenous-led initiative that has been part of our organization for 25 years.

Established in 2000, the program was created in partnership with Elders, drum keepers and Indigenous community leaders to reflect three key priorities: education, recreation and culture. Today, it continues as a weekly drop-in program at the Saddletowne YMCA that welcomes participants of all ages and backgrounds. Through this program, participants learn Powwow dance styles, drumming and cultural teachings through storytelling, hands-on learning and guidance from Elders, drum keepers and dance instructors. The program also integrates wellness teachings such as stretching, Powwow fitness, nutrition education and learning how to care for one’s body through dance.

At its core, the Indigenous Drum & Dance program is about connection to culture, to community and to one another. Youth participants continue to demonstrate growth in confidence and leadership, often supporting newcomers as they learn. Families also share how the program creates meaningful opportunities for cultural learning and time together.

“We are so grateful for this program. It’s a safe and inclusive space that’s deeply rooted in culture, and seeing our child grow in confidence and connection through this experience is amazing to see.” ~ Parent participant

As we recognize National Indigenous History Month, we honour the Elders, knowledge keepers, families and community partners who continue to guide and strengthen this work. Through programs, ceremonies and shared experiences, we are reminded of the importance of cultural connection, respect and belonging.

We invite everyone to join us this month in learning, listening and celebrating together as we continue walking the path of reconciliation.
