YMCA Calgary and Calgary Public Library Partner on a Proposed West District Location
CALGARY, AB (April 21) – YMCA Calgary and Calgary Public Library (the Library) have announced a proposed joint-use recreation and library facility in Calgary’s West District.
The proposed facility represents an innovative partnership-based model, bringing together YMCA Calgary, the Library and private and public partners to deliver recreation and library services more quickly than traditional approaches.
The facility responds to rapid population growth in West Calgary, including a high concentration of young families and will serve over 41,000 households within a 12-minute drive. By 2030, more than 3,000 homes are expected in the West District community, meaning thousands of residents will live within walking distance of the new hub.
“Investment in recreation centres and libraries is critical to addressing some of the most pressing issues facing our community including rising physical inactivity, social isolation, and unemployment,” said Shannon Doram, President and CEO, YMCA Calgary. “By working together with the Library and our partners, we can create a welcoming, inclusive facility that meets the needs of a thriving community within a growing city.”
“Libraries are essential spaces for learning, connection and belonging,” said Sarah Meilleur, CEO, Calgary Public Library. “Through this partnership, the joint-use facility would expand access to library programs and services while supporting recreation and wellness for residents of all ages.”
To make this project possible, Truman has committed to donating land located on Broadcast Avenue SW, across from Radio Park in West District. Construction will depend on investment from all three levels of government as well as philanthropic partners. City Council has already approved an initial $3 million to support detailed design and planning, positioning the project to be construction-ready pending full capital funding in 2027.
Proposed facility highlights:
- 60,000 sq. ft. of recreation space including a 7-lane 25m pool, leisure pool, gymnasium, fitness studios and multi-purpose rooms.
- 9,000 sq. ft. of library space including children’s areas, reading zones and meeting rooms.
- Integration with outdoor amenities across the street in the 8-acre Radio Park, featuring a playground, spray park, basketball court, off-leash dog area, amphitheater and open green space.
- 200+ underground parking spaces to reduce congestion and support facility access.
