The Power of Connection: A Story of Friendship and Giving
At YMCA Calgary, it’s the connections between people that bring our community to life. These connections grow through everyday moments, shared experiences and the meaningful ways members support one another.
Within this large YMCA community, smaller groups naturally form, creating spaces where individuals can connect, belong and lift each other up. One of these groups is a close-knit circle of members who call them the “COGs,” short for the Cool Old Guys.
The group includes Pasquale, John, Tony, Ron Bill, Paul, Lorne, Mike, Guy and Dave. Every few weeks, these 10 friends come together over coffee to share stories, talk about life and discuss what’s happening in the world around them.
In November 2025, one of these meetups became something even more special. Pasquale, a retired restauranter, invited the group to his home for a homemade Italian dinner. Everyone contributed to cost, with the understanding that any leftover funds would be donated to charity.
“We wanted to turn a simple gathering into something that could make a difference for others,” shared Dave, a member of the COGs.
Earlier, Dave had shared a personal story about his three-year-old granddaughter, Gianna, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma and is receiving care at the Oncology Unit at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary. Inspired by Dave’s story, the group donated $800 to the Oncology Unit, supporting the families and children who need it most.
This story is a reminder that even small acts like sharing a meal or spending time together with friends can create meaningful impacts. It reflects the spirit of YMCA Calgary, where connection, generosity and belonging extend beyond our walls and into the wider community.
