At Camp Chief Hector, we deeply value, respect, and protect the natural environment that makes camp so special. As part of this project, we have carefully identified and are removing select trees near buildings and sleeping areas to reduce wildfire risk while preserving the character of the landscape.

Protecting Camp Chief Hector for the Future

The FireSmart program is grounded in wildfire science, focusing on how fires start, spread, and impact communities. One of its key principles is reducing flammable materials close to structures that can carry fire directly to buildings.

By creating space around camp infrastructure:

  • We reduce the risk of fire reaching buildings
  • We improve safety for campers, staff, and visitors
  • We help ensure Camp Chief Hector remains a safe and vibrant place for generations

This work has been thoughtfully planned to balance environmental stewardship with safety, ensuring the long-term protection of the camp community and surrounding ecosystem.

Frequently Asked Questions

FireSmart is a set of guidelines designed to reduce the risk and impact of wildfires. It includes recommendations for managing building materials and surrounding landscapes to make communities safer.

Trees close to structures can act as “fuel,” allowing fire to spread directly to buildings. Removing select trees helps reduce flammable material and interrupts the path a fire could take, significantly lowering risk.

Whenever possible, wood from removed trees will be repurposed and reused in sustainable ways.

Construction will occur from late May through September 2026.

We are working hard to minimize disruptions:

  • Construction activity near lodgings and yurts will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
  • Work is scheduled while campers are engaged in activities across camp
  • The Camp Chief Hector team has coordinated closely with contractors to protect the quality of programming

You may see construction vehicles on site, but their presence will be managed carefully to limit impact.

This proactive work helps ensure Camp Chief Hector remains safe in the face of increasing wildfire risk. Taking action now protects current campers and staff, and future generations as well.
