Free Tutoring Support for Calgary Youth
Through the Tutoring Table Program, YMCA Calgary offers free tutoring services to vulnerable youth ages 14 to 21. As part of the United Way’s All in for Youth initiative, the program aims to remove the financial barrier of private tutoring to help students pass their registered math courses. Students are selected to participate in the program based on financial need, academic need, and the motivation to attend weekly sessions.
Courses supported include:
• Math 15, 10-C, and 10-3
• Math 20-1, 20-2, and 20-3
• Math 30-1 and 30-2
• Science 10, 20, and 30
• Physics, Chemistry, and Biology 20 and 30
Volunteer tutors serve as guides in students’ learning, assisting them with challenging concepts and enhancing their confidence in problem-solving. Volunteers also serve as positive role models and mentors, often providing students with valuable career advice and sharing their personal experiences and knowledge. Volunteers receive ongoing training about the curriculum and how to positively guide youth.
During each session, students receive homework support and a safe, open space to build confidence and enhance their skills. Volunteers are paired with up to three students in an in-person setting and one or two students on online tutoring platforms. The tutors work with their group once per week during the scheduled sessions over the course of the semester.
Program Format:
- Tutoring Table runs at 10+ in-person locations across the city and online via Zoom.
- The program runs after school from Monday to Thursday.
- Students will be enrolled one day a week for two hours over the course of an entire semester.
- Additional program support includes Diploma Prep and our 5-week Summer Club program.
Diploma Exam Prep
The Diploma Prep sessions aim to help high school students prepare for the Math 30-1 and Math 30-2 diploma exams. It is completely free and available for all students regardless of their enrollment status in our regular tutoring program. Diploma Prep consists of the following three sessions:
- Session A: Crash Course - our Lead Tutors will work through pre-selected questions to review concepts from the Math 30-1 and 30-2 curriculums. Practice workbooks will be provided prior to the session.
- Session B: Mock Exam - Students will complete a practice diploma exam under exam conditions.
- Session C: Follow-Up - Students who wrote the mock exam will work with a volunteer tutor to review their exam results.
