Y story: Steve Irish

At the YMCA, we believe in people. We see their potential. We find strength in telling stories of our differences and find inspiration in sharing our diversity – all with the purpose of bringing us closer together.

Meet Steve, a current member of the Y regularly visiting our Melcor YMCA at Crowfoot. He has been a YMCA member for 44 years!

“The Y is my second home. I like what the Y stands for and what it can provide.”

Steve started his Y journey like most of us do, with swimming lessons at a young age. He always found himself gravitating back to the Y, even with company access to a different fitness club. The Y has provided Steve with social opportunities and the family atmosphere, especially at Melcor YMCA at Crowfoot, where the camaraderie speaks volumes.

“This Y keeps people coming back. It’s very personal and friendly.”

With a focus on physical literacy, strong kids and mental wellness, the Y continues to meet the needs of the community and its members. Steve has gotten physically fitter with the Y and helped him grow as a person. He takes the time during his visits to chat with other members, learning about their cultural backgrounds.

When he isn’t on the weight floor, you can find Steve shooting hoops in one of our gymnasiums. He continuously speaks highly of the available programs throughout the Y.

“They do a great job of promoting both physical fitness and mental wellness. I always recommend the Y because of the great facilities, if they don’t have what you want at one, they will have it at another location.”

The YMCA exists so that everyone has an opportunity to belong. We focus on strengthening the communities around us and supporting our members, like Steve. Whether you are looking to workout, to shoot hoops, or find social connections, the Y has something for everyone.
