Y Story: Eva Kwan

YMCA Calgary donor Eva Kwan showcases a smile on a YMCA triangle background

Meet Eva Kwan, President and CEO of Method Works Consulting, and devoted donor to YMCA Calgary.

For Eva, the allure of a shared vision with the charitable sector became the cornerstone of her journey with the YMCA. Her connection to the YMCA dates to the inception of Method Works Consulting, which has worked with the YMCA since the early 2000s. Eva's expertise in optimizing charitable endeavors and leveraging technology to bolster their impact has become a testament to her commitment as a donor at the YMCA.

The YMCA holds a special place in Eva's heart, resonating with her through the embodiment of our core values of respect, honesty, responsibility, and caring. From the leadership team to the program staff and volunteers, Eva perceives a sense of ownership that permeates every corner of the YMCA. Stepping into a facility, she can sense that these values are not just preached but lived, creating a profound impact on the community.

Eva passionately believes that: “When you give to the YMCA, you give to the community.” In her view, the YMCA serves as a haven, addressing societal challenges by providing a safe space for families and youth. Having a safe place to go may not always feel available, but the YMCA has shown that it can be that place for everyone. Eva fondly recalls taking her children to programs like basketball and swimming, relishing in the comfort that they were safe and well cared for, highlighting the YMCA's role in bridging societal gaps.

The essence of community holds immense significance for Eva, who recognizes the impact of giving back: “Giving back to the community helps builds stronger bonds between members, making it a more enriched environment in which everyone benefits.” She believes the best way to see the impact is to go and experience everything that the YMCA has to offer.

Her husband Michael is a PhD candidate whose research focuses on supporting autistic young adults in promoting healthy lifestyles, and he echoes this sentiment. Together, they share a commitment to fostering a brighter future by surrounding themselves with like-minded individuals who believe in the transformative power of community. For example, Michael speaks very highly of his experiences as a camper and eventual camp counsellor at Camp Chief Hector YMCA. Those experiences fostered a positive learning environment which promoted perceiving challenges as opportunities, collaboration with peers, and building lasting friendships.

Eva's story intertwines seamlessly with YMCA Calgary's vision to ensure that no one is turned away. It stands as a testimony to the transformative effect of supporting those around you. As Eva invites others to be part of this movement, she encourages everyone to witness the potential in others, help them shine, and contribute to building a community that thrives.
