For Aphrodit Espanioli, fitness and community have always gone hand in hand. When she found the YMCA, she found the perfect place to bring both passions to life.
“I’ve always had a love for dance and fitness, and teaching group fitness classes like Zumba lets me share that with others,” she said. “But over time, it became more than just teaching. It’s about creating a safe, welcoming space where people come together to have fun, enjoy the music and support one another.”
The YMCA gave Aphrodit that platform, and she’s never looked back.
“My Zumba class is a big party,” she said with a smile. “We start and end every session with a high five and always make sure to welcome new participants, so they feel like part of the group from the start.”
Aphrodit’s Zumba classes at Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge are high-energy and joyful. With global music that helps everyone connect in their own way, she sets the tone for an inclusive, uplifting atmosphere.
“I love how supportive and inclusive everyone is. The connections we build in class go beyond the workout. We’re like a big family, and that’s what makes the YMCA so special.”
In recognition of her leadership and positivity, Aphrodit was recently awarded the YMCA Fitness Leadership Award, an honor she credits to her participants and the supportive YMCA team. “I’m so grateful to the members who voted for me and to the YMCA for allowing me this opportunity,” she said. “I’m constantly inspired by the genuine energy and positivity in every class.”
And she’s not stopping there. Aphrodit has trained to become a group cycling instructor and is bringing her signature high-energy, welcoming vibe to that space as well.
“My favorite fitness tip? Make it fun,” she said. “Find something you love, so it doesn’t feel like a chore. Whether it’s dancing, cycling or something else, when you’re having fun, it’s easier to stay motivated and the results will follow.”
As a true ambassador of health and happiness, Aphrodit embodies the YMCA’s promise: to build communities that grow, thrive and support one another, one dance move at a time.
