Inclusive Programs in a Supportive Sensory Space

YMCA Calgary is offering an adaptive program at Saddletowne YMCA to create more inclusive opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to participate, connect and thrive. This free drop-in program takes place in our Sensory Room, a space designed to support sensory exploration, calming activities and quiet rest.

The Sensory Room offers a welcoming environment where participants can engage in multisensory games and activities, or simply take time to reset. Features of the space include adaptable lighting, noise-cancelling support, and a variety of textures and sensory elements that accommodate different needs and preferences.

Why This Program Matters

Many recreation spaces are designed around the needs of able-bodied individuals, which can unintentionally create barriers for people with different mental, emotional or physical needs.

YMCA Calgary is committed to creating welcoming spaces where everyone can take part in community life and access opportunities that support their health and well-being. This adaptive program is one way we are helping make recreation more inclusive and accessible for all.

About the Sensory Room

The adaptive programs are held in YMCA Calgary’s Sensory Room at Saddletowne YMCA. A sensory room is designed to provide a multisensory experience, allowing individuals to engage with a variety of calming or stimulating elements in a supportive environment.

Sensory spaces can offer many benefits, including:

  • Stress reduction
  • Increased relaxation
  • Motor skill development
  • Emotional regulation
