Y Story: Moona D’Souza

Moona poses with a mountain background

Meet Moona D’Souza. As a devoted volunteer, member, and donor of YMCA Calgary, Moona’s story is one of unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in her community.

Moona’s schedule is a whirlwind of activity, yet she embraces each role with dedication. Splitting her time between volunteering as a math tutor at YMCA’s Tutoring Table and caring for animals at the AARCS, Moona is a force to be reckoned with. And all this while pursuing her studies in a software program and working as an engineer. Her energy is boundless, fueled by her love for helping others and helping animals.

As Moona reflects on her experiences as a tutor, she recounts the story of a student she worked with who dreamed of becoming an engineer, much like herself. Despite facing academic challenges, this student persevered with Moona's guidance and support. When they finally achieved their goal of scoring 70%, Moona felt an overwhelming sense of pride and fulfillment; this is the motivation she needs to continue doing her part to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

For Moona, the YMCA represents a place of opportunity, growth, and empowerment: “You see first-hand how the YMCA helps people get their feet off the ground and give them a chance to participate in things that they may not have access to outside these walls.”

Having experienced firsthand the stigma associated with seeking help with studies in the Middle East, Moona cherishes the inclusive and supportive environment fostered by YMCA Calgary. Through programs like the Tutoring Table, YMCA removes financial barriers and provides essential support to youth, helping them excel academically and feel motivated.

As a donor, Moona recognizes the importance of giving back to the community. She not only dedicates her time but also contributes financially, knowing that her support helps keep vital programs operating. Through her company's matching program, Moona maximizes her impact, leveraging both her volunteer hours and monetary donations to benefit those in need.

“It’s just something I knew I wanted to do. Yes, I give my time, but I realized funds help a program stay afloat, too.”

The Tutoring Table program, a part of the United Way’s All in for Youth initiative, exemplifies YMCA Calgary's commitment to fostering academic success and personal growth among youth. Volunteer tutors like Moona serve as mentors and guides, offering support, encouragement, and valuable life advice to their students. Together, they form a community of learners with a shared goal of empowerment and achievement.

Moona's story shows the power of compassion, dedication, and community. Through her dedicated efforts and commitment, she embodies the ethos of YMCA Calgary, inspiring others to join her in building a brighter future for all.
