Introducing the Calgary Flames Foundation, one of YMCA Calgary’s committed community partners since 2013!
Fostering positive community impact has always been at the heart of everything the Calgary Flames Foundation does, especially in their commitment to inspiring youth. Through their efforts, they’ve provided all Grade 6 students in Calgary with a complimentary 13-month YMCA membership, creating opportunities to play and grow in inclusive communities.
The Calgary Flames Foundation’s collaboration with YMCA Calgary began with a shared vision to make a lasting impact on the lives of children in the community. Through this work, they’ve seen how access to valuable resources, community support, and opportunities to grow can positively affect a child’s confidence and overall well-being. “Not everyone is suited for organized sports, so it’s important to create opportunities for kids to stay engaged, healthy, and have fun in other ways,” says Candice Goudie, Executive Director of the Calgary Flames Foundation.
However, not all families have the means to provide these activities and resources. Recognizing this, the Calgary Flames Foundation sought ways to create more accessible opportunities for kids to stay active and connected to their communities. This led to a game-changing partnership between YMCA Calgary and the Calgary Flames Foundation.
Since 2013, the Calgary Flames Foundation has partnered with YMCA Calgary to offer the Calgary Flames Grade 6 YMCA Membership, providing over 40,000 Grade 6 students with free 13-month YMCA memberships.
The program's mission aims to improve the lives of Calgarians by focusing on grassroots sports, health, and education, with a special focus on youth. By promoting healthy lifestyles and participation in sports and activities, the program helps kids stay engaged, active, and supported as they grow more independent.
Candice explains the decision to partner with the YMCA, saying, “The YMCA is in every corner of the city. The strategic work that they do to help kids be the best they can be, the foundation wants to be a part of that.” The program provides a space for kids to explore various activities, build confidence, and find belonging during a crucial stage of their lives. Additionally, it helps children who might otherwise move on from recreational activities and sports remain active and engaged.
Through this partnership, the Calgary Flames Foundation and YMCA Calgary have helped create life-changing opportunities for countless children. Candice encourages families to take advantage of the program, reminding them just how easy it is to get involved. “It’s free, it’s easy to register, and we hope kids and families love it. The risk is zero!”
Furthermore, the impact of the YMCA goes beyond just youth programs. The Calgary Flames Foundation understands the power of community and the ability to create connection and inclusivity at every step of life. “The YMCA is a hub of activities you can be a part of - you can do anything at the YMCA! It’s a community, and finding belonging within a community is critical.”
