Outdoor Skills Weekend at Camp Chief Hector

Tame the wild! Enjoy a weekend learning the skills needed to truly enjoy the outdoors – with confidence! For beginners.

September 20-22, 2019

Spend your weekend at camp for this fun and social weekend designed specifically for adults (18Y+) This beginner program will help you develop outdoor skills in your area of interest, become more comfortable in the outdoors and enjoy all that Camp Chief Hector YMCA has to offer. A Kids Club with activities and learning opportunities will also be available for younger families members ages 3 years and up.
Includes accommodations (in bunk houses, unless specified), food, courses and a variety of camp activities. Participants may choose from one of the courses listed below:

Backpacking 101
Get geared up to backpack! You will learn the essential gear to pack (and how to pack it), navigation skills, tarp shelter techniques, risk/wildlife management strategies and the important “Leave No Trace” principals.You’ll then enjoy a fun overnight backpacking trip with tent accommodations.
Wilderness Survival 101
Survive in the great outdoors! In this hands-on course you will learn essential skills for outdoor survival from shelter building, fire making, food storage and water safety, to signaling for help and how to look after your psychological well-being in an emergency. You will put your skills to the test by sleeping in your hand-crafted survival camp!
Canoeing 101


Get your feet wet with flatwater canoeing! You and your canoe partner will learn flatwater fundamentals including paddle strokes, directional turning, stopping, launching and landing techniques. You’ll learn Transport Canada’s safety equipment requirements, self-rescue skills and what essentials to pack in your canoe.

Mountain Biking 101


Know how to ride, but want to expand your abilities on our amazing trail systems? You will expand abilities on unique terrain, learn basic bike maintenance and put your skills to the test during a long, scenic ride in the beautiful Bow Valley. Bikes and helmets will be provided by our partners at Rebound Cycle in Canmore.

Horsemanship 101


Get more comfortable with these magnificent animals! You will learn how to saddle and unsaddle like a wrangler, properly mount and dismount, riding basics and proper trail etiquette with an assigned horse. You will also learn about horse composition and behaviors. By the end of your ride, you will be more comfortable with horses and want to ride more!



Want do bring your younger family members with you? Your kids will also enjoy a learning adventure with our experienced outdoor leaders. Adventures include – but are not limited to: hiking, building shelters, ropes challenge course and a variety of games. *Please note: Kids Club runs from breakfast time to supper time. No overnight supervision is provided.
