Calgary Flames Lace Up Newcomer Hockey Program


New to Canada? New to Hockey? In partnership with the Calgary Flames Foundation, YMCA Calgary is offering a FREE beginner floor hockey and ice-skating programs for children and youth ages 10 –14 years old. Participants will have the opportunity to practice floor hockey basics, learn to ice skate, play fun games on the ice, and make new friends. All equipment can be provided, or you may bring your own. No prior experience is required. Participants should come dressed in comfortable clothing and shoes. See our upcoming opportunities listed below.

Program Details:

Learn to Skate & Floor Hockey Program

(30min skate lesson, 45-minute floor hockey lesson)

  • Step on the ice for a 30-minute lesson that will teach participants how to skate. Lesson’s will focus on beginner skills from how to get up on your skates, to learning how to stop. Once finished on the ice, the program will move to the gymnasium to learn about the sport of Floor Hockey.

Floor Hockey (only):

  • Learn the basic skills and rules for the game of Floor Hockey. Instructors will teach basic hockey skills through fun activities and games (Ex. how to hold a stick, pass and shoot a ball). Sessions will focus on skill development, growing participants confidence and teaching the values of teamwork.

    List of Equipment Required:

    Learn to Skate (on ice)

  • Dress in layers with a warm jacket & snow pants
  • Mittens or Gloves
  • Skates (hockey or figure skates)
  • CSA approved hockey helmet and face cage

Floor Hockey Lessons (gym floor)

  • Comfortable clothing and indoor running shoes
  • Water bottle (water fountains are closed, but water bottle fill stations are open)

* if you do not have any of the equipment listed, please indicate during the registration process

2. Create a new account by clicking “Get Started” on the Online Portal
3. Complete filling in your personal information and create a password
4. You will receive a confirmation email confirming your account activation
5. Once your account is activated, please contact Brett Warren (contact info below) to register for the program
