Memberships

Currently, YMCA Calgary is offering “pay as you go” opportunities to access our facilities. That’s because the current offerings and number of appointments we are able to offer is limited based on government-imposed restrictions. As an example, we are currently restricted to around 15% of the appointments we were able to offer in the fall of 2020.

 

We have not reactivated YMCA memberships at this time. We do not believe it is fair or practical to reactivate tens of thousands of YMCA memberships due to these ongoing restrictions on capacity and availability of appointments.

 

However, we realize that the current YMCA “pay as you go” model is not working for everyone.

The curriculum is crafted specifically to your needs and ability level to achieve your swimming goals and may include increasing comfort in the water, learn to swim, stroke improvement, competitive training and more. Swimming Lessons Register your and/or your child for a group swimming lesson! Progress your swimming skills over the course of 8 weeks in a group of 4-6 participants. Supervised Lane Swim Book a swimming lane for an hour. Provincial health regulations require 1-to-1 supervision of all high intensity activities and that includes lane swimming. Under current guidelines, we must have a YMCA staff member present and actively supervise each individual during each appointment. Each lane will have one participant per appointment. Health and Fitness
Program Description Registration Locations
Low Intensity Weight Floor This appointment is intended for people engaging in low intensity exercise on the walking track or weight floor which does not significantly increase heart rate or breathing rate/depth. Participants should be able to speak in full sentences while engaging in this type of exercise without pausing to catch their breath. Use of the track, free weights, and weight training equipment is permitted for low intensity activities. Use of cardio equipment is not permitted. Open and on-going

High Intensity Weight Floor and Cardio This appointment is intended for people who want to do cardiovascular, interval style or conditioning workout that raises the heart rate and makes you breathe heavier for any portion of or all of your session. Any exercise that causes you to feel out of breath or have trouble speaking in full sentences is considered high intensity. This may or may not include cardio or weight training equipment. These sessions are supervised by a fitness trainer in accordance with current government guidelines. Open and on-going

Q: How can I book an appointment?

A: All appointments can be booked using our Online Registration Portal.

  • Activate your previous YMCA Online account by clicking “Activate your account with Avocado” You will need your YMCA Membership Barcode in addition to one of the following options: Family PIN (eConnect), Street Address, or Date of Birth.
  • Complete filling in your personal information and create a password.
  • You will receive a confirmation email confirming your account activation.

General FAQs

 

Q: Why can’t you just switch on my membership payment?

A: Provincial Health Regulations for indoor fitness significantly limit what we can provide and how you access it. Much of what a membership includes will not yet be available. For example, much of the weight floor equipment and most opportunities to swim as normal are not available under the existing guidelines. Capacity on our weight floors will be much smaller throughout the day, and there will be limited appointments at first. We do not believe it is right to charge a monthly membership when access will be restricted in this way. It is unlikely you will be able to attend daily due to appointments available – pay-as-you-go is a much fairer alternative during this period. Q: How many appointments are available each day?

A: The number of certified instructors available limits the quantity of High-Intensity Weight Floor or swimming appointments. Government regulations are specific on the supervision required, and who may carry them out. On average each day you can expect to see:

  • Low Intensity appointments= 15 appointment slots/per hour/per location
  • High Intensity appointments=3-5 appointment slots/per hour/per location
  • Lane Swimming appointments= 15 appointment slots/per day/per location
  • Schedules for Group Fitness Classes will be posted in each YMCA location and available on the YMCA Calgary App

 

Please know this is only temporary under the current government restrictions. Your cooperation will help us keep our doors open, and to expand our facilities, programs and services as quickly as possible.

 

Q: Why are there so few appointments?

A: Provincial health regulations require 1-to-1 supervision of all high intensity drop-in bookings and swimming. Under current guidelines, that means a YMCA staff member must supervise you individually as you carry out those activities. The number of certified instructors available limits the quantity of High Intensity Weight Floor or Swimming appointments. Government regulations are specific on the supervision required, and who may carry them out.

 

Q: Why open at all if the number of appointments are limited?

A: YMCA Calgary decided to re-open despite significant restrictions because the Y has an obligation to provide safe and quality experiences to our community, especially in moments of great need. This will give more members of our community safe access to quality recreation opportunities to support both their physical and mental health. It will also put us in a better position to re-open more thoroughly and more quickly when restrictions are loosened.

 

Q: Why is it so expensive?

A: Before COVID-19, “Drop In Access” to the YMCA has been priced at $16 for adults for many years. This price has not changed. Many of the current appointments must also be staffed 1-to-1 to comply with the provincial regulations. Everyone will have access to the same amenities and level of service. Therefore, we are charging one rate for all. Reduced pricing is available for ages 12+ to access High & Low Intensity appointments and Supervised Lane Swim. To book these appointments for youth please contact Member Services directly, as they are not available online. As in all YMCA programs and drop-in bookings, financial assistance is available to those requiring it. At the YMCA, no one is turned away.

 

Q: What if I can’t afford the listed price?

A: YMCA Calgary provides financial assistance for those who wish to register for membership, programs, or camps, but cannot afford the full registration fee. Any individuals and/or families that were receiving financial assistance before prior to the closure of the YMCA will continue to have that honoured for the remainder of their membership term. For individuals and families whose financial circumstance have changed in light of the COVID 19 pandemic, they will be able to apply for financial assistance by either providing proof that they have been approved through any of our partner organizations (City of Calgary, AISH, Health Benefits card etc.) or by providing documentation showing they received or qualified for EI benefits. All individuals and families who meet this criterion will be approved for three months and then will need to re-apply to continue their assistance.

 

Q: How long will this service scenario last?

A: We all hope this is for a concise period. Membership will be re-activated, and YMCA facilities will extend hours as soon as we can provide a service-level equal to that seen in late 2020 or better. That includes unsupervised access to the weight floor and swimming opportunities. We will return to this level of service very quickly following a change in health regulations.

 

Q: Why can’t we access as normal and make our own decisions?

A: YMCA Calgary is a health and wellness organization. Throughout the pandemic, we have committed to put people first and to follow the guidance of the Provincial Government and Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health. Allowing unsupervised access to our weight floors and pools would be in breach of the current regulations and would not be putting the safety of our members, participants, or staff first.

 

Q: I thought “Drop-In” wasn’t allowed?

A: Provincial health regulations specifically forbid “drop-in” bookings. However, the provincial definition of “drop-in” means no appointment is necessary. All our current activities require appointments. The long-standing YMCA definition of “drop-in” effectively means “service not accessed through membership” – i.e., you pay-as-you-go.

 

Q: Why are other gyms doing this differently?

A: Some may be interpreting the rules differently. YMCA Calgary believes it is responsible to follow the guidelines set forth by Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health to keep our members, participants, staff, and volunteers safe.

  • Keiser & Life Fitness Bikes
  • Box jump/plyometrics
  • Jump rope
  • Floor space for Tabata/Interval Training/HIIT style workouts
  Signage will be placed throughout the facility to guide you on what equipment is available.

 

Q: What does “supervised” appointments mean?

A: Supervised appointments are bookings that require a YMCA staff member to accompany you 1-on-1 to comply with current Provincial Guidelines. On the Weight Floor a qualified Personal Trainer will provide one-on-one guidance on exercise technique, form correction and proper use of equipment as well as general fitness advice as required. For Lane Swim, a qualified Swim instructor will provide one-on-one stroke correction, help formulate swim workouts and provide active feedback of swim technique.

 

Q: What does “independent” appointments mean?

A: Independent appointments are bookings where participants can use designated recreation areas without 1-on-1 supervision. These bookings will include low-intensity strength floor and low-intensity group fitness classes. YMCA staff will be monitoring our guests on the strength floor to ensure low-intensity exercises are being performed and educating our guests on restrictions if they are not being followed.

 

Q: What is “low intensity” exercise?

A: Low intensity fitness includes exercises not focused specifically on cardio that have a low depth and rate of respiration. “Low intensity” will look different for everyone based on several factors such as fitness, health, and type of activity. To keep activity at a low intensity for you personally, there’s a simple measure. It’s the TALK test. If you can speak comfortably or carry on a conversation during your workout without sounding breathless, you are exercising at an acceptable low intensity level. Appointments can be made for the following Independent Low Intensity bookings:

  • Group Fitness Classes
  • Independent Low Intensity Weight Floor

 

Q: What is “high intensity” exercise?

A: High intensity fitness is often focused on cardiovascular exercises that have a high depth and rate of respiration. Using the TALK test – you will not be able to say more than a few words without pausing for a breath during high intensity exercise Appointments can be made for the following Supervised High Intensity bookings:
