Thank you to AltaGas Ltd. for your generous gift of $5000 to Camp Chief Hector YMCA

This gift went toward the refurbishment of tipi fire pits out at out camp.  These refurbished fire pits are helping us keep our camp a safe place for children, youth and families.

Campers at Camp Chief Hector sleep in tipis with a fire pit in the middle that provides heat and light. Check out these photos of some happy campers returned to camp for a visit last week. They think these new fire pits are pretty great.

We appreciate support from our community to continue giving children, youth and families opportunities to be active and experience the outdoors. Thank you, AltaGas!

Camp Riveredge – Nature in the City

Last week I had the opportunity to sit down with Fan Wu, Program Manager at Eau Claire YMCA, to chat about Camp Riveredge. Located in a gated area of Sandy Beach Park, YMCA Camp Riveredge is an outdoor camp inside the city.

Fan helps coordinate Riveredge Day Camps and says it’s one of Calgary’s best kept secrets. It’s completely different from any other day camp in the city and is a completely unique experience for kids.

“It’s the stepping stone between YMCA branch day camps and YMCA Camp Chief Hector overnight camp,” Fan said.

Campers at Camp Riveredge day camps participate in a lot of the same activities as normal summer camps. Low ropes challenge courses, bouldering walls for low climbing, archery, field games, orienteering, crafts, campfire, canoeing and even tubing on the river. They have tipis for shelter and spend nearly all of their time outside.

“It’s a lot of fun for the kids,” Fan said. “It’s outdoors, away from video games and technology. It’s a great time of play.”

Parent Kirsten Silcox has already signed her kids up for Camp Riveredge this summer after the fantastic experience they had last year.

“My two children attended Camp Riveredge for the first time last year. I had originally signed them up for a week in July and a week in August, they loved it so much I had to switch them from the YMCA swim camp so they could go for two more weeks.

They loved being outdoors, the crafts and especially the games! They came home every night singing songs they learned at campfire. I have signed them up again for several weeks this summer and they can’t wait to go. I would recommend this camp to all parents whose children have a love of the outdoors.”

“Getting kids to experience nature is really important,” Fan said. “This is an easy way to do that.”

YMCA Camp Riveredge day camps run for one or two week sessions throughout the summer. Children are divided into age groups from 6-15 years old. Camp runs from 8:30am-4:30pm and busing is available from YMCA Calgary locations from 7:30am with pick-up by 5:30pm.

Spaces are Still Available for Camp Riveredge Campers. Register your child today!
