Grade 6’s Blew the Roof Off!

AllGymEau Claire was BOOMING this past Friday as our Grade 6’s congregated on the third floor to celebrate the past 10 months we’ve spent together.

What a truly amazing year we’ve had! Between impromptu gaga ball face-offs, nutrition workshops, tournaments, dance parties, Lego sessions, and cooking classes, it seems we have done it all at the YMCA! This past Friday, we got all of our branches together for our Grade 6 Year End Celebration, and it was incredible! Even though we were rained out of our Riveredge site, we still managed to collect a whopping total of 122 grade 6 students under the Eau Claire roof!

After enjoying some pizza and veggies, we split off into groups and participated in a variety of different stations. All our grade sixes got to HarveyStudiotry a little bit of everything; from Lego, to Kin ball and team building, to the first ever YMCA dance-rap-karaoke party!

We even got to meet Harvey the Hound and former Flames defenceman, Rhett Warrener!

The best part was having all of our members come together and experience something new with their fellow branches. All of us were excited to be a part of something so different – and we ensured that everyone in the building knew it! We are the first cohort of Calgary YMCA’s Grade 6 members, Flamesand we made sure to sign this school year off with a bang!

Summer is just around the corner and we are all bustling with the exciting opportunities that await us! To find out more information on what your branch is doing this summer, take a look at our Activity Page or contact your Youth Coordinator!

Thanks again to all of our lovely grade 6 members who have made this year at the YMCA one of our most memorable! And thank you to all of our incredibly dedicated staff and volunteers as well as the Calgary Flames Foundation for Life for making this year happen! Without all of us – staff, members, and supporters alike – this year’s success would not have been possible!

Saddletowne YMCA Volunteer Appreciation

Its volunteer appreciation week here at Saddletowne YMCA!  We would like to thank all of the special people who take time out of their days and evenings to help out and be a part of our YMCA family.  If it was not for people like yourselves we would be at a loss!

As a special thank you, Nikol’s Youth Leadership group has made a very special banner just for all the volunteers.  Come into the branch and check it out!

Spin a HUGE Success at Saddletowne YMCA

March 4, 2013 marked the very first Spin for Strong Kids for Saddletowne YMCA.  It was a very exciting day with lots of people anxious to spin for a great cause!  We had staff, volunteers, members, LINC classes, Y Survive teams, a former Team Canada Olympic Woman’s hockey player, and even a whole family come out to spin.  We would like to thank everyone for all their support and enthusiasm!

Give With Target Campaign: Thank You for Helping Kids!

Back in November, Target launched the Give With Target Campaign, where up to $1 million would be donated to select Canadian charities – including YMCA! The social media campaign asked Canadians to vote for a cause through Facebook. In less than three days, voters helped YMCA Canada receive a whopping $325,000, and YMCA Calgary received a total of $11,908.05!  Thanks to you, YMCA is able to raise awareness for active play and use the donations raised towards YMCA Strong Kids, to allow children and youth to belong, grow, thrive, and lead.

Thank you for voting with the Give with Target campaign and helping kids and youth have more opportunities to lead healthy and active lives. Because of you, we can help reduce barriers to access so more children and teens will be able to access YMCA programs and engage in active play. Thanks to you, more children and teens will have a positive and safe haven where they can realize the benefits of active play.

Congratulations to all of the charities who participated in the Give with Target campaign.

Adopt a Family Thank-you

I know Christmas is long over and it’s almost February, but let me remind you of Family 2 in our Adopt a Family Program here at Eau Claire. Family two was mom and dad and four boys. They boys are 16, 6, 2 and 6 months.  Mom and dad asked for  and received items like transit tickets, grocery gift cards and a garbage can for the kitchen. The oldest boy received gift cards, because when you’re 16 nothing is more cool than getting to spend your gift cards at the mall with your friends. The younger kids got clothes, a foamy for camping, craft supplies and diapers.

Today I  was reminded why we do what we do.  I received a thank-you letter in the mail from family 2. This is what the mom wrote:

Sorry Jenny it has taken so long to reply back over Christmas for the adopt a family program we received. We were so grateful for all you gave to us. You definitely made our Christmas complete.

My oldest son was very impressed by the gift cards especially. He was happy for all he received.

The two youngest boys are still too young enough to have known what was really going on. Yet I can assure you that tearing up all that wrapping paper was fun for them and made them laugh and smile.

Our six year old was so grateful for all he received. When he opened his blue foamy for camping he looked at it weird and said ‘what’s this for?’ I then told him ‘it’s so you no longer have to bring so many blankets to camp’ (to double them up as a foamy). He thought that was a good idea and then asked ‘so when are we going camping?’ and  I had to laugh as winter camping is quite cold. The 6 year old was very happy to have the honors of passing out gifts to us, to mommy and papa as we usually only worry about the kids as not enough money to get us gifts. We also appreciate the gift cards as it freed up some of our money that we would use otherwise on groceries etc to put forth on bills.

Again thanks so much for everything. So very much appreciated.

To all the members, volunteers and staff who gave gifts or time to the Adopt a Family Program, Thank-you.
