RBC Invests in Children’s Safety

“People, especially kids, deserve every opportunity to live healthy and active lives…”

RBC

RBC is investing $250,000 in YMCA Swim to Survive, a proven and effective drowning prevention program delivered at YMCA Calgary. As part of the establishment of the RBC Active for Life Fund, RBC’s gift will enable Saddletowne YMCA in the Genesis Centre for Community Wellness to teach more children in Calgary’s diverse northeast neighbourhoods fundamental, water-based skills to survive if they fall into water.

YMCA Calgary has recognized RBC for this commitment to community safety by naming the leisure pool at the Saddletowne YMCA as the RBC Leisure Pool.

Helene Weir, YMCA Calgary’s President and CEO, says RBC’s gift demonstrates a shared commitment to keeping children safe, especially those from new Canadian families who may be less familiar with deep water. “This gift could literally save lives,“ Weir says. “RBC is showing tremendous leadership in enabling the YMCA to help a generation of kids understand the importance of water safety.”

RBC’s donation will also allow YMCA to invest in support, training and programming around physical literacy for children.

“People, especially kids, deserve every opportunity to live healthy and active lives, and we believe that physical literacy is an important part of achieving that,” says Jeff Boyd, Regional President, RBC. “We’re humbled to have the opportunity to support Active for Life and help kids build the confidence they need to enjoy sports safely.”

Brigitte Edwards, General Manager, Saddletowne YMCA, sees an opportunity to affect thousands of Calgary kids positively. “If we can help kids learn these skills when they are young, there’s a much better chance they will remain physically active throughout their lives,” she explains.

“Thank you to RBC for trusting in the YMCA to deliver on our promise to the community,” says Ian Dundas, Co-Chair of the Power of Potential campaign cabinet. “This support will go a long way towards engaging more young people, helping them reach their full potential – the anchor purpose of our campaign.”

Grade 6’s Blew the Roof Off!

AllGymEau Claire was BOOMING this past Friday as our Grade 6’s congregated on the third floor to celebrate the past 10 months we’ve spent together.

What a truly amazing year we’ve had! Between impromptu gaga ball face-offs, nutrition workshops, tournaments, dance parties, Lego sessions, and cooking classes, it seems we have done it all at the YMCA! This past Friday, we got all of our branches together for our Grade 6 Year End Celebration, and it was incredible! Even though we were rained out of our Riveredge site, we still managed to collect a whopping total of 122 grade 6 students under the Eau Claire roof!

After enjoying some pizza and veggies, we split off into groups and participated in a variety of different stations. All our grade sixes got to HarveyStudiotry a little bit of everything; from Lego, to Kin ball and team building, to the first ever YMCA dance-rap-karaoke party!

We even got to meet Harvey the Hound and former Flames defenceman, Rhett Warrener!

The best part was having all of our members come together and experience something new with their fellow branches. All of us were excited to be a part of something so different – and we ensured that everyone in the building knew it! We are the first cohort of Calgary YMCA’s Grade 6 members, Flamesand we made sure to sign this school year off with a bang!

Summer is just around the corner and we are all bustling with the exciting opportunities that await us! To find out more information on what your branch is doing this summer, take a look at our Activity Page or contact your Youth Coordinator!

Thanks again to all of our lovely grade 6 members who have made this year at the YMCA one of our most memorable! And thank you to all of our incredibly dedicated staff and volunteers as well as the Calgary Flames Foundation for Life for making this year happen! Without all of us – staff, members, and supporters alike – this year’s success would not have been possible!

Thank you, Nurses!

linc and nurses

We’ve wrapped up another fantastic semester working with the U of C nurses here in the North LINC program! The LINC students wrote letters to the nurses in beautiful handmade cards to say goodbye. These thoughtful notes really illustrate the impact of the partnership, and highlight the importance of building relationships between the newcomers and health care professionals in our community. Check out what they had to say!

Every week, I learnt something special. In the first week, I learnt physical exercises to make our heart stronger. In the second week, I learnt to eat less sugar, salt and fat, and also choose healthier fats. In the third week, I learnt to look for fresh products at the grocery store. -Najeeba, Pakistan

Now I know how to read the labels that I can understand what I’m buying. Your presentation also help me improve my English. I also want to thank YMCA for inviting the nurses for the health guide, and making it possible to learn how to be healthy.   -Tram, Vietnam

I’m glad I got the chance to meet you. I like to thank you for your positive attitude and vibrant energy. I’ll always remember your nice smiles. -Sarita, India

I learn from your class many different things that I didn’t know before. How much percent of sugar, fat, sodium, are dangerous, and I know how many percent are useful. I now know how to know your heart rate without medical things. -Esrael, Eritria

I like the time spent with you in the gym. I appreciate you give us knowledge about healthy living and importance of gym. I hope you will become successful women in future. – Mehwish, Pakistan

All of you tried your best to guide every single person about their heart beat, sugar level, and blood pressure. We appreciate your positive attitude, to help us get to know about things in the facility. – Rehama, Pakistan

I begin to drink more water and I use iron, and vegetables. When I go to the grocery store, I begin to look for fresh products. – Faride, Iran

I’m glad to meet such patient and professional people like you, with whom I enjoyed speaking during gym exercises, and your letting me know how my English speaking improved. –Soufia, Morocco

I learned more English. I enjoyed so much with you nurses. I learn about less salt. Now I begin to drink 1% milk. I eat whole wheat bread. – Mandeep, India

I appreciate you coming to my class. It is rare to find such kind friends. With your help I learned about exercises, activity, heart beat, sodium, high blood pressure, cholesterol, fat, and also healthy food. I didn’t know anything about these before and I never read the labels. I’m grateful for you coming to our class. We hope you enjoyed having us as much as we enjoyed being with you. –Ravinder, India

Thank you, Nurses! We hope to see you again soon!

Thank You AltaGas!

Thank you to AltaGas Ltd. for your generous gift of $5000 to Camp Chief Hector YMCA

This gift went toward the refurbishment of tipi fire pits out at out camp.  These refurbished fire pits are helping us keep our camp a safe place for children, youth and families.

Campers at Camp Chief Hector sleep in tipis with a fire pit in the middle that provides heat and light. Check out these photos of some happy campers returned to camp for a visit last week. They think these new fire pits are pretty great.

We appreciate support from our community to continue giving children, youth and families opportunities to be active and experience the outdoors. Thank you, AltaGas!

Thank You YMCA Saddletowne Preschool Volunteers!

As the Saddletowne YMCA Preschool Director I am truly honoured to work with a team of compassionate, warm and caring individuals.  Many of our instructors are volunteers, dedicating a part of their day every week to our students and parents.  Their investment of time is important to me- as are the smiles I see them bring to our students every day!

To all the YMCA Saddletowne volunteers, and to all volunteers across our association- Thank you for helping children and families in our community Grow, Thrive, Lead and Belong!
