Youth Drop-in Hip Hop and Latin Freestyle !

Hey Youth! Join us at Eau Claire during Flames Friday tonight from 6:30-7:30 PM for some Hip Hop and Latin Freestyle Dancing!

hip hop dance girlsOur dance instructor, Melvi Alvarado, is one of our former YMAP students. He is currently a part of Dance Fusion Calgary and has generously donated his time to teach some of Eau Claire’s youth the ins and outs of Hip Hop and Latin dancing.

Melvi will be joining us every Friday from 6:30-7:30 until the middle of December. Come by and check it out!


Ultimate Leaders

Looking for something to do this summer? Too old for regular day camps? Come and join in our  Ultimate Leaders program this summer! It is a FREE two week camp for youth aged 14-15 years designed to develop leadership skills and build confidence! Youth will spend their days swimming, learning and playing games, working on arts and craft, and being introduced to various communication and leadership skills. The program also involves volunteer-based projects such as assisting with younger day camp groups!

This is the perfect stepping stone for youth looking to volunteer with future camps or becoming day camp counselors themselves. All camps, including Ultimate Leaders, start July 3, 2012 but don’t wait, spots are filling up – register today by contacting your local branch!

Kudos to ‘Chris’ on the Understanding Teenagers website for a great article entitled 15 Ways to Help Teenagers Feel Like They Matter which is all about helping teenagers feel they belong, understand their identity and make a difference in the world.

Central to the adolescent journey is the daunting task of discovering and owning an adult identity. Our identity is made up of many facets. Some of the most significant are; knowing we matter to others, having our contribution valued, and and being entrusted with responsibility for something or someone.

This journey can be scary and uncertain, but also exciting and exhilarating. It is rarely easy, but when adults provide opportunities for teens to stand up, take responsibility, value their contribution, and allow them to feel like they count, it does go a little more smoothly.”

By now, most of us have heard staggering facts about the levels of high weight and lack of exercise/movement in young people today. There are some facts out there though that still take us off guard.

Here’s an article on the Family Education website that reveals some new facts that still catch us off guard and provides suggestions for moving forward in a positive, healthy light:

“Every time our teens sprawl in front of the TV, their metabolism slows to a crawl. Researchers at Memphis State University and the University of Tennessee explored the link several years ago and were startled to find that kids’ metabolisms were lower while they were watching television than when they were resting and doing nothing at all! The typical teen now spends almost 30 hours a week in front of the tube, while eating high-fat snacks.”

Your Opinion on How to Avoid Embarassing your Teen?

What do you think about this article on the India Parenting website on how to avoid embarassing your teenager? Is it being hyper-sensitive or are the words helpful to you as a parent?

“All good things come to an end and our cute little child eventually grows up one day into a teen. It is important, as parents, to understand the changes that our child goes through at this age. It becomes necessary to ensure that our actions as parents do not embarrass our teen. If you constantly embarrass your teen in front of others, you could find that you have a hostile teen on your hand.”
