Contributing to a Healthy Community: Outdoor Exercise

Now that we have “sprung forward” and the weather is getting nicer, many of us like to take our workouts to the great outdoors.

Outdoor exercise has many great benefits:  it adds variety and interest to your workout, it feels good to be in the sunshine, you just have to step out your door and begin – no travel time, and the changing terrain can add more of a challenge to your routine.

Here are also some precautions that will keep your workout safe:

  1. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you can check the weather channel for pollens in the air and exercise at a time when the pollen count is low.
  2. Ensure you dress in layers – the weather in spring is very changeable – it’s easier to take layers off if you become too warm than it is to have too little clothing if you get cold.
  3. Watch out for that winter gravel – many a cyclist and runner has been injured by a fall due to slipping on gravel – take extra care until the street sweepers have done their job.
  4. The UV index is also available on the weather channel – it’s early in the year right now, but is still possible to sunburn if you’re out too long unprotected.  Try to exercise when the UV index is low; if this isn’t possible, make sure you wear a hat, sunglasses and, of course, slather on that SPF 30 or higher!

Stay healthy and accident-free and enjoy your outdoor workout!

YMCA Outdoor Schools

Did you know Camp Chief Hector YMCA offers a variety of outdoor schools? Options include:

ECO School: This four-day program aims to develop environmental awareness and community building in an outdoor setting for grade 5 and 6 students. Student learning is fun, active and experiential. Outdoor school counsellors help students use maps to explore the site, examine various tree species, play the Predator-Prey game and build team-work through the low-ropes and challenge courses. Rate $215.25 (includes GST) per student.

Outdoor Experiential School (O.E.S.): This four-day program is designed for students in grades 7 to 12 and aims to foster positive social growth, group awareness and leadership development. Students participate in a number of activities designed to build teamwork and outdoor living skills. A major component of the program is the planning and completion of a full-day focus activity in one of three disciplines: Hiking, horseback riding or canoeing. Rate: $273.00 (includes GST) per student.

SunshipTM Earth: A four-day internationally recognized grade 5 and 6 program developed by the Institute for Earth Education that encourages students to reconnect with the earth and reflect upon their ecological practices. Students learn about energy flow, cycling, diversity, community, interrelationships, change and adaptations. Activities such as helping a giant leaf photosythesize, building soil from rocks and playing the role of a squirrel as its food resources change, helps students to understand these concepts. Students also take part in the Predator-Prey game, team-building activities and the construction of a small world. Rate: $225.75 (includes GST) per student.

Hector Spring School: A four-day program designed to meet various learning objectives from the grade 5 and 6 science and social studies curricula. Students will learn about the food chain as they play the Predator-Prey game and revisit the past as they explore our Voyageur heritage. During their day hike, students will venture around the foothills and learn to identify the various tree species. Students will learn about the stories of early Canadians as they participate in cultural activities, such as tipi living and animal tracking. Rate: $220.50 (includes GST) per student.

Custom Bookings: Programs are available for school groups who want to work together and develop leadership skills. With the guidance of YMCA staff members, students are able to participate in activities such as initiative games, low-ropes, archery, hiking, the challenge course and the high-ropes area. It is also possible to book our site for teacher-facilitated programs or band camps. Program length can range from a one-day experience to a multiple day residential program. Rates vary depending on program options.
