By Nikol McDonald – Robart, Saddletowne YMCA Youth and Climbing Wall Director
If you have not yet been to the Saddletowne climbing wall, you do not know what you have been missing out on. The Saddletowne climbing wall is currently open for climbing 7 days a week for programs and other climbing opportunities.
We are currently bringing lots of climbing education and awareness to the Northeast communities surrounding the Saddletowne YMCA. Through our current climbing programs, new to climbing courses and open climbing times we are offering our members something new, something they have always wanted to try, something they can do with their family or just something great to do!
Climbing is quite the full body work out, an amazing confidence booster and a neat social opportunity for children, youth and adults.
It is exciting to announce that our current climbing members and program participants are continuing to grow into a solid climbing community of all ages and abilities.
The Saddletowne climbing wall staff and volunteers are firm believers that once we can get people into the climbing wall area to try climbing, we can provide them with an unbelievable climbing experience that will have them coming back to try to climb higher. People who take part in our climbing wall will be more interested in the social and physical benefits of climbing.
The Saddletowne climbing wall has some really amazing staff and volunteers.
I would like to take the opportunity to introduce you to one of the wonderful staff who works on the Saddletowne Climbing wall.
Derek Eaton – Loker
Hailing from a small town in southern Ontario, Derek is a graduate of the Outdoor Adventure program at Algonquin College and the National Leadership School’s Yukon Instructor course. Originally coming to Alberta to become a better white water canoeist, Derek fell in love with the mountains and has instead focused on hiking and climbing for the past 5 years.
Derek has worked for Camp Chielf Hector for 3 seasons before starting at the Saddletowne climbing wall. Derek practices most styles of climbign including scrambling, traditional rock climbing, ice climbing and glacier mountaineering. He is most at home on long trips into the wilderness and climbing on big mountains in the Rockies. Derek is an ACMG climbing gym instructor and wilderness first responder; he is working towards becoming a hiking guide and outdoor climbing instructor.
Please stay tuned for more Bio’s coming this week from the Saddletowne climbing wall staff.
