2015 YMCA International Conference

More than 300 YMCA delegates from Canada, Mexico, the USA and beyond will gather to explore and innovate how we develop our leadership to integrate global insight and perspective. The 2015 YMCA International Conference is dedicated to this vital task. A collaborative initiative of YMCA Canada, YMCA Mexico and YMCA of the USA, this all-important gathering is hosted by YMCA Calgary on behalf of YMCA Canada.

The goal? To strengthen our collective ability to develop leaders with a global perspective by:

  • Building knowledge about the characteristics and behaviours of leaders who hold a global outlook;
  • Sharing best practices in global strategies and education programs that engage our diverse communities in meaningful ways;
  • Connecting with colleagues from around the world to enhance collaborative initiatives that are mutually beneficial.

Eau Claire YMCA’s S.T.A.R.S. Program

Grade 6 is a great time for exploring and learning about your community. Often times, however, we find that youth around the grade 6 age become apathetic towards physical activity and community engagement. The Grade 6 Memberships were created to help combat this apathy. But what else can we do to keep active and stay involved over the summer?

The Eau Claire Y has decided to create a program that gets our Grade 6 Members out into the community once a week to learn more about what it has to offer! We will be meeting every Wednesday to explore our community and get involved in new and interesting ways. From community art projects to capture the flag, Eau Claire’s STARS program will have it all! In STARS, Students Thrive and Reach for Success!

This program is free for all of our Grade 6 Members and will be registered by the week. Program is scheduled to run every Wednesday from 9:00am-2:00pm. A schedule for the summer is being created and will be posted on the website once it has been finalized.

If you are interested in participating in this fantastic opportunity, please download a registration form by clicking here! Please fill out the forms and return the to the branch as soon as possible. Spots for the program are limited and are on a first come first serve basis.

For more information or with help registering, please contact Sarah Thornton, Eau Claire Youth Coordinator at 403-781-1685 or e-mail her at sarah.thornton@calgary.ymca.ca

Leadership 1 spots still available at Camp Chief Hector YMCA

Spend an amazing month outdoors and improve your group leadership, risk management, and outdoor living skills on this 27-day program. Click here for a full description of our Leadership 1 programs.

Two options are available:

Leadership 1 – Hike and Horse – based from our Gray Jay site | 16Y

Share and develop your leadership skills with your group based out of our Gray Jay site in the mountain wilderness of Yaha Tinda (80 kilometers west of Sundre, Alberta). Learning from a four-day backpacking trip, your group then plans and leads a ten-day backpacking trip. Become an experienced horse-person; during a four-day horseback riding experience you will further develop your riding as well as your ability to lead and communicate. You will also assist in the daily operations of Gray Jay – meal preparation and cleaning, stable management, and site maintenance.

Leadership 1 – Canoe and Hike – based from our Mainsite | 16Y

Share and develop your leadership skills with your group based out of the camp’s main-site in the upper Bow Valley. Learning from a four-day backpacking trip, your group then plans and leads a ten-day backpacking trip. Learning and developing canoe skills in the Bow Valley, the group then plans their journey on the Kootenay River. These challenging adventures require your teamwork in goal setting, route planning and menu planning. Most importantly, these adventures include your own leadership contributions to the group and to the camp.

As with all of our YMCA programs, fee assistance is also available.

To register: 403-269-6156 or 1-866-430-9622

Camp Chief Hector invites you to an evening of story-sharing and information about Sac Dene 2015.

Sac Dene is a six-week canoe trip and a two-week counseling experience for 17 year old co-ed youth. Focusing on leadership development, the Sac Dene group travels north to paddle the Mackenzie River, visiting communities along the way. Sac Dene participants, as part of the Leaders-in-Training program, return to Camp Chief Hector YMCA to become part of the counseling team for the final two weeks of the summer.

Free Grade 6 Memberships

Hey, Grade Sixers!

Did you know that just by being in Grade Six, you get a FREE YMCA membership? That means that you can go to any YMCA in the city, and get in for free. This membership lasts for an entire year! It started on September 1st, and can be used by you until August 31st – that’s about 1 week before you start grade 7. 1297609000845

With your membership, you can go to any Y and use the pool and gymnasium. Each branch is different, but some of the extras that you can use include: squash courts, rock climbing walls, dance studios and youth rooms. Also, you will be able to come to any of our “Flames Fridays” and participate in the activities we have running there.

At Eau Claire, our Flames Fridays run from 2:00-10:00 PM every Friday. These Fridays are kind of like Teen Nights, but they are much longer and are open to all youth – not just teens. This means that you can come with your friends and drop in on any of our activities. At Eau Claire, you can expect to find things like:

  • Basketball
  • Badminton
  • Take a look at SHINE
  • Ping-pong
  • Youth in the Arts (5:00-6:00)
  • Hip Hop and Latin Freestyle Dancing (6:30-7:30)

Flames Fridays are a really great way to connect with other kids your age, and learn about all of the things you can do at your branch.

On top of all of that, there are some Free Grade Six programs that have been made just for you! Here at Eau Claire, we have some drop-in things like:

  • Quidditch
  • Theatre and Vlogging (where you can practice your acting and then use our props and cameras to make your own videos)
  • Open Gym Games (where you can learn lots of new activities)
  • Board Game Café (to play things like Magic the Gathering and other games)

We also have some registered programs which mean you have to either talk to somebody in the branch (front desk) or go online to say you would like be a part of the program. Our free programs that grade sixes can do are:

  • Active Y Kids (up to age 11)
  • Adventurers (Leadership for grades 5 and 6)
  • SHINE (Working out your body)
  • Youth Running Club

If any of these things sound interesting you, you should drop by the branch to register for your membership. You need to make sure you bring a parent or guardian with you. They will have to sign some papers that say they are ok with you having a membership. All you need to do is go to the front desk with your guardian and proof that you are in grade 6. Most families use their Grade 5 report cards, but if you don’t have that, you can always get a letter from your teacher, or use something else like a Patrol Card. You can really use anything, as long as it says:

  1. Your Name (i.e. John Short)
  2. Your grade (i.e. Grade 6)
  3. The School Year (i.e. 2014-2015)

Again, this is all FREE!! And it’s super easy to sign up for! We’ll see you at the Y!!

Free YMCA Memberships to Grade 6 Students

Grade6Bball_478747809_small Grade6TweenHeart_467105659_small

YMCA Calgary and the Flames Foundation for Life are excited to announce a partnership to provide free YMCA memberships to all City of Calgary youth registered in Grade 6.

Grade 6 Membership Benefits:

  • Free membership for grade 6 school year
  • Access to all 5 city-wide YMCA Calgary locations
  • Access to no-cost programs such as Adventurers (leadership training including character development, communication, volunteerism, and fundraising) and Active Y Kids (physical activity, nutrition, and goal setting) and Flames Friday & Teen Night activities
  • Advanced registration and discounted fees for programs

Why Grade 6?

Studies have shown grade 6 is the age in which a child is faced with many decisions, often with two options – a healthy one and an unhealthy one.

At YMCA Calgary, we believe youth need a place to belong, to feel safe, and to explore and grow during the important developmental stage of their grade 6 year. We want to support our youth in this critical time as they:

  • age out of traditional care models
  • develop new interests
  • prepare for junior high

We intend to give grade 6 youth opportunities around leadership, recreation, and holistic health. Our ability to promote and build healthy relationships will help the youth

  • expand their pro-social networks
  • have opportunities to build healthy relationships with peers
  • establish relationships with positive, adult role models

Why is the Flames Foundation for Life partnering with the YMCA?

The Flames Foundation want to make Calgary the healthiest City in Canada and this is a step. We want youth to not only be active but to become educated in a healthy lifestyle. This includes teamwork, leadership, social skills, goal setting and positive decision making. We hope that this age group is exposed to elements of a healthy lifestyle and will have the education required to motivate healthy choices moving forward in their physical and mental development.

How does a Youth get a Grade 6 Membership?

Drop in to any YMCA Calgary location to complete a membership form for your youth (parent/guardian signature, proof of child’s grade required).

When does it start?

The Grade 6 Membership program will officially launch September 1, 2014. Students in grade 6 will be able to get a one year membership valid September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2015, with the program continuing for new grade 6 students in September 2015.
