Wednesday Brings You Good Karma

Beginning on Wednesday, May 23rd, Shawnessy YMCA is adding another fantastic drop-in class option for you.
Mid-morning is the busiest time in the branch, and we are now able to offer an alternative to the oh-so-popular Cross-Training class in the studio.

Karma is a gentle yoga/fusion-based stretch class taught by certified instructors.

The practice of Karma Mind/Body classes are designed to increase your flexibility and focus.
Karma will help to revitalize your body and spirit, incorporating the disciplines of proper breathing techniques, stress reduction, and muscular strength.

Karma will be offered 9:15-10:15am in MP2, right across from the library. 
This class is scheduled to run beginning May 23rd until the end of the Spring Session. 
Drop-In class tags are required, and available at member Services upon check-in.


Meet Erik Johnson-Member of the Month at Shawnessy YMCA

Erik has been working out at Shawnessy YMCA for about 4 years.  He was nominated because of how he inspires others with his determination and positive attitude.

He is a super friendly guy who comes here to strengthen his body so he can walk on his own again someday.  Erik says the biggest reason he comes to the YMCA is to spend time with people.

Next time you see Erik say hello!  His enthusiasm is infectious and he has a way of encouraging everyone he talks to.

Erik embodies the YMCA core values of respect, honesty, responsibility and caring.


From dancing at the Olympics to running around the world, meet Calgary YMCA’s chief financial officer!

Volunteer blogger Beka Sharrock has been getting to know some of personalities who make up the senior leadership team at Calgary YMCA, finding out what drives them to work for the YMCA and the person behind the job title….

Name: Sabina Lokanc

Job title: Chief Financial Officer

Job description: As my job title suggests I oversee the financial management of the organization, by overseeing  the budget process,  monthly financial statement review and analysis, , and managing capital and cash flow. I also prepare the year end financial statements and manage the financial audit. I head up our IT department, managing our current systems and processes, implementing new ones and overseeing the controls set in place to govern these.

Background: I am a Chartered Accountant. I worked for two public accounting firms, KPMG and Deloitte before taking this position at the Y. This job complements my diverse background as I was a licensed dietitian and worked as a Public Health Nutritionist before returning to school to study business. The Y is a perfect bridging and joining of my backgrounds – health and finance.

The most important part of my job is: fiscal responsibility and accountability. We have various stakeholders including our partners, Board of Directors, donors, members and users of our facilities and programs.

The most challenging part of my job is: managing the priorities and getting information in a timely manner so we can assess how we are doing. It’s challenging to not manage ‘in a bubble’.

The best part of my job is: being part of an organization that does great work and contributes  so much for the good of the community. For me, in terms of what I myself like the most, it is knowing that we are making a difference and working and collaborating with individuals throughout the organization and beyond who believe in our mission.

The best piece of advice I have been given: ‘have passion in the work that you do because then it will never really feel like work’.

Not a lot of people know that: I danced at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. I performed with my brother and sister as part of the opening ceremony, dancing an ethnic Slovenian dance, which is my heritage.

If I wasn’t working at the Y I would be: travelling! I like to run marathons and I would love to run around the world. New York, London, Rome, Boston and Prague are on my bucket list.

My weakness is: chocolate!

Five words to describe me: First, I need my coffee…

What the Y means to me: a sense of community and belonging.

Name: Shannon Doram

Job title: Vice President Health and Wellness

Job description: I am the lead for our Health and Wellness strategy, and healthy living program development for YMCA Calgary. I am excited to be involved in the development of the ‘Wellness Centre’, a special project at the new South Health Campus. My day-to-day work includes working closely with YMCA staff (promoting health inside the YMCA), our partners in health promotion, and representing YMCA Calgary on various projects and health-related committees.

Background: My role is actually a very new role to the organization and I have been in my job for just a little over four months! I have an undergraduate degree in kinesiology from the University of Calgary and a graduate degree in health promotion from the University of Alberta, School of Public Health.

The most important part of my job is: To lead and establish a strategic direction for health promotion at the YMCA that engages staff, volunteers, members, participants and our greater YMCA community in an effort to do this together! Understanding the health-related needs and interests of groups we work with is an important first step in doing this, especially with new projects related to healthy living.  Evaluation is an important component, and we will be measuring the outcomes of our work.

The most challenging part of my job is: Exploring the many facets of the YMCA (since I’m still ‘new’ to the organization) and learning where we have the greatest opportunity to help improve people’s health. Starting new initiatives and projects is always an exciting challenge and coordinating the many people, partners and ideas keeps me on my toes!

The best part of my job is: Being able to see the difference the YMCA makes in people’s lives, and knowing that my work is an important part of their journey with us. The opportunity to help people set a strong foundation for health that will help them into the future is an important part of what motivates me.

The best piece of advice I was given: My best friend once told me, “Honour your truth, and act with integrity”…. It’s been an important guidepost for me, which essentially means, do what you love and with good intention, and you can’t go wrong.

Not a lot of people know that: I spend most weekends in the mountains, either hiking, cross country skiing, trail running or cycling on my road bike.

If I wasn’t working at the Y I would be: On my bike! I love the feeling of being out on the road, with nature and going fast.

Five words to describe me: Dedicated, excitable, determined, fun and happy!

Weakness: Licorice Allsorts (the mini ones). My grandma was from the UK and I picked up a love of sweets from her.

What the Y means to me: The Y provides an important opportunity for people to spend time together with their families, for individuals to improve their health, and for communities to come together. The culture of the Y is one that supports people ‘where they’re at’ and provides support and encouragement to realize potential. It’s a special place.

The Stars at Camp Chief Hector YMCA

Did you see the crescent Moon beside Venus
shining in the evening sky last night?

At Camp Chief Hector YMCA the night sky is
wonderfully dark, so that stepping out from
the warm lodge, you find yourself under a
glittering dome of stars…and planets.

One benefit of the long nights of winter is the viewing
time to see the stars above us. At this time of year,
I can see planets and stars when I walk my
children to the school bus stop in the morning, as
well as when we head inside for dinner at the end
of the day.

Just before tucking the children in for betime,
we can walk onto the porch and say, “Good-night!” to all of
Venus, the moon, Jupiter and Mars – a fine
gathering! You can see these planets, too: look
for the bright and NOT-sparkling “stars” in the
south half of the sky, with Venus in the west,
Jupiter in the middle and Mars to the east.
These planets will be on view for the next few
months. With standard binoculars you can even
see four moons of Jupiter! Amazing.
