Eau Claire was BOOMING this past Friday as our Grade 6’s congregated on the third floor to celebrate the past 10 months we’ve spent together.
What a truly amazing year we’ve had! Between impromptu gaga ball face-offs, nutrition workshops, tournaments, dance parties, Lego sessions, and cooking classes, it seems we have done it all at the YMCA! This past Friday, we got all of our branches together for our Grade 6 Year End Celebration, and it was incredible! Even though we were rained out of our Riveredge site, we still managed to collect a whopping total of 122 grade 6 students under the Eau Claire roof!
After enjoying some pizza and veggies, we split off into groups and participated in a variety of different stations. All our grade sixes got to try a little bit of everything; from Lego, to Kin ball and team building, to the first ever YMCA dance-rap-karaoke party!
We even got to meet Harvey the Hound and former Flames defenceman, Rhett Warrener!
The best part was having all of our members come together and experience something new with their fellow branches. All of us were excited to be a part of something so different – and we ensured that everyone in the building knew it! We are the first cohort of Calgary YMCA’s Grade 6 members, and we made sure to sign this school year off with a bang!
Summer is just around the corner and we are all bustling with the exciting opportunities that await us! To find out more information on what your branch is doing this summer, take a look at our Activity Page or contact your Youth Coordinator!
Thanks again to all of our lovely grade 6 members who have made this year at the YMCA one of our most memorable! And thank you to all of our incredibly dedicated staff and volunteers as well as the Calgary Flames Foundation for Life for making this year happen! Without all of us – staff, members, and supporters alike – this year’s success would not have been possible!
Today Wednesday 4th February we hosted Drop in Soccer for all our grade 6 members, we had a good turnout of players and it was lots of fun!
Next week we will be meeting again from 5-6 pm in gym 1 on Wednesday at the Shawnessy YMCA for a special Grade 6 Vs Y-survive event, all grade 6 members are invited so come along and try some soccer!

Eau Claire is hosting a Grade Six Basketball Tournament on Friday, November 7th!
We are calling on our YMCA Youth between the ages of 10 and 12 years to register for this awesome opportunity. Participating in the tournament is not only a fun way to spend a Friday evening, but a great way to get active and make some new friends!
The tournament will begin at 6:15 and will continue until 7:30 pm. This is a 4-on-4 tournament – each team is required to have at least one substitute player (i.e. 5 players per team). You are only required to register yourself as teams will assemble on Game Day. Singles or doubles will be grouped together by Eau Claire staff/volunteers before the event begins.
In addition to other prizes, teams will be competing to play in our Final Game. The top two teams will be invited to represent Eau Claire in the Association-wide tournament that will be held in December (dates yet to be confirmed).
To participate, youth are not required to be in grade 6, nor do they need to be members. Participants must be between the ages of 10 and 12 to register. Non-members will be required to pay the $4.00 drop-in fee on the day of the tournament.
If you are interested in registering for this qualifier tournament, please complete the registration form and drop it off at the Eau Claire branch by no later than Wednesday November 5th! We will see you there!

Why Grade 6?
Studies have shown grade 6 is the age in which a child is faced with many decisions, often with two options – a healthy one and an unhealthy one.
At YMCA Calgary, we believe youth need a place to belong, to feel safe, and to explore and grow during the important developmental stage of their grade 6 year. We want to support our youth in this critical time as they:
- age out of traditional care models
- develop new interests
- prepare for junior high
We intend to give grade 6 youth opportunities around leadership, recreation, and holistic health. Our ability to promote and build healthy relationships will help the youth
- expand their pro-social networks
- have opportunities to build healthy relationships with peers
- establish relationships with positive, adult role models
Why is the Flames Foundation for Life partnering with the YMCA?
The Flames Foundation want to make Calgary the healthiest City in Canada and this is a step. We want youth to not only be active but to become educated in a healthy lifestyle. This includes teamwork, leadership, social skills, goal setting and positive decision making. We hope that this age group is exposed to elements of a healthy lifestyle and will have the education required to motivate healthy choices moving forward in their physical and mental development.
How does a Youth get a Grade 6 Membership?
Drop in to any YMCA Calgary location to complete a membership form for your youth (parent/guardian signature, proof of child’s grade required).
When does it start?
The Grade 6 Membership program will officially launch September 1, 2014. Students in grade 6 will be able to get a one year membership valid September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2015, with the program continuing for new grade 6 students in September 2015.
Can you believe it?
All Grade 6 Students in Calgary are now eligible for a free YMCA Membership during their grade 6 year (September-August).
We’ve partnered with the awesome Calgary Flames and Flames Foundation for Life to make grade 6 the best year ever and get Flames Friday’s going.
