Defining Your Wellness

There are a lot of words and phrases in the fitness world that can be confusing to even a seasoned gym-goer. I’m hoping to take some of the mystery out of your workout, and define some terms and equipment that can trip us up.

Sets – The number of cycles of repetitions of an exercise performed.

Repetitions (reps) – the number or times an exercise is executed in one set.

BOSU – Blue half ball with a rubber dome and hard black bottom.  BOSU means BOth Sides Up, meaning you can exercise and do balance work on it dome up and dome down.

TRX – A portable suspension training system that leverages gravity and body weight.  Traditionally black and yellow.

Fusion – Fusion Fitness refers to a blend of two forms of exercise.  Most commonly we see it as a blend of Yoga and Pilates.

Plyometric – also known as “jump training” or “plyos”, are exercises in which muscles exert maximum force in short intervals of time, with the goal of increasing power (speed-strength).

HIIT Training – High Intensity Interval Training.  HIIT mixes traditional strength exercise with high intensity cardiovascular intervals and plyometric exercises


YSurvive is Coming in February

Keep your motivation going after the New Year with some friendly and healthy competition.

Yes YSurvive is back for its sixth year! This is a great way to meet new people, try new activities, shake up your routine and stick with fitness goals.

All YMCA Calgary members, volunteers and staff are welcome to join this fun event. Just stop by Member Services to register, get your t-shirt and be placed on a tribe with a captain. The tribe that earns the MOST points during the competition wins bragging rights and special recognition on the YSurvive Cup!

To earn points you can run, swim, lift weights, climb, shoot basketball, play badminton or participate in yoga and fitness classes. There will also be special challenges, themes and prizes!

Don’t miss out on all the fun! Registration starts in January and the competition runs February 2 through March 9. Watch for details in displays at all locations.

Fall Programming Has Begun!

Fall session may have already begin today, but some of the most popular programs at Shawnessy YMCA still have space!

Post-Natal Fitness – Great for new moms to get back into a wellness routine (with your new favorite person in tow)
Tuesdays, 10:30-11:30am

Introduction To Yoga – A great start for learning basic yoga poses and the art of clearing your mind
Mondays, 5:00-6:15pm

Zumba – Latin dance at it’s finest, in a fun party style class! Dance your way to wellness!
Mondays, 10:30-11:30am & 6:15-7:15pm, Wednesdays 7:30-8:30pm, Saturdays 10:30-11:30am

Pre-Natal Yoga – Expecting? Teach your body to limber up in a comfortable and safe environment with other expectant moms
Thursdays 6:30-7:45pm

Boxer’s Workout – An amazing option for sport conditioning, teaching and honing different skills to all that come!
Wednesdays 5:15-6:45pm

What is Fusion?

If you’ve been wondering what fusion is, the summer is the perfect time to try it out!  We are offering 4-week courses to give you a taste of this intelligent and inspiring blend of yoga, pilates and fitness.  You will progress through a series of yoga postures and exercises to train strength, balance and flexibility. Relaxation is included at the end of each class.

Tuesday class begins July 30 7:35-8:35pm
Wednesday class begins July 31 10:00-11:00am
4 classes – Member rate $36, Non-member rate $56

Want to continue to progress toward your fitness goals this summer?  In addition to our drop-in program, we offer a variety of registered classes to choose from:

MIND/BODY CLASSES:
Yoga:
Thrive in a peaceful atmosphere while experiencing flexibility, strength, balance, relaxation, stress management and breathing techniques designed to help you on your path of health and wellness.

We offer Yoga Level 1, Level 2, Yoga for Runners, Gentle Yoga and Youth Yoga.

Pilates Level 1: Build core strength, flexibility, and great posture in this challenging self paced  workout. Tone your tummy, hips and create long, lean muscles.

Fusion: Is an intelligent and inspiring blend of yoga, pilates and fitness through a progressive series of yoga postures and exercises to train strength, balance and flexibility. Relaxation is included at the end of each class.

BABY AND ME H2O:
Have fun with your baby and get to know other moms while getting into shape! Improve your aerobic conditioning, build strength and stretch while your little one plays in the water right beside you in their own personal floatation device (boat). Your baby will love being in the water while you experience this playful way of getting fit! Babies ages 6-18 months are welcome.

ZUMBA:
Join the Party!  Zumba Cardio Dance will take you through basic salsa, reggaeton, flamenco and other international rhythms with a fitness flare.  Dance your way into shape!

ZUMBATOMIC:
Zumbatomic is an explosion of music, dance and energy! It is a 100% kid-friendly, fun and healthy program for children ages 4-12 years using the ZUMBA fitness concept.

Summer program registration is ongoing for YMCA members.  If you aren’t a YMCA member (yet!), summer registration begins on Monday, June 3rd at 5:30am.  We’ll see you bright and early!
