Crowfoot YMCA Renamed as Melcor YMCA at Crowfoot

In a significant boost to its Power of Potential Campaign, YMCA Calgary has received a $1-million donation from Melcor Developments Ltd. celebrating the strong relationship between the YMCA, Melcor and its founding family, the Meltons. In recognition of this substantial and meaningful gift, YMCA Calgary has renamed its Crowfoot YMCA facility in northwest Calgary as the Melcor YMCA at Crowfoot. A YMCA member and champion for decades, Andy Melton says the fit between Melcor and the YMCA is a perfect match. “We are builders of communities at Melcor. But, like our company, the YMCA isn’t only about bricks and mortar; it’s about providing value to the community.”

“The Y humbly and quietly goes about its business, making a real impact,” Melton says. “We hope this investment will inspire others to consider YMCA Calgary as worthy of support and investment as it raises $30-million to make a healthier more connected Calgary.”

YMCA Calgary President and CEO Helene Weir says Andy Melton’s – and Melcor’s – commitment demonstrates a match in values. “The words honesty, caring, responsibility and respect hang prominently inside the Melcor YMCA at Crowfoot,” she says. “Andy and the team at Melcor embody those values and put them to good use creating communities and investing in the success of kids, families and everyone who lives and works within them.”

“Through this contribution to the YMCA campaign, Melcor has shown tremendous leadership.” says Evan Hazell, Co-Chair of the Power of Potential Campaign cabinet. “This support will go a long way in engaging more people of all ages and abilities in reaching their full potential – the anchor purpose of our campaign.”

Brian Baker, President and CEO of Melcor Developments adds, “we are proud to have the Melcor name associated with an organization focused so selflessly on the health of children, youth and adults, building leaders and creating great community opportunities for wellness. ”

Help Us Make an Impact in Our Community

The 2015 YMCA Strong Kids Campaign goal of raising $1.6 million will financially help over 20,000 children and youth access YMCA Calgary programming. This represents 1 in 5 children and youth served by YMCA Calgary.

Kids can help create strong communities for today and for the future, but only if they have the chance to reach their full potential. Your donation will ensure kids can participate in programs to live healthier, happier lives now, but also to grow into productive adults.

The economic impact of keeping our kids healthy and active is proven and documented.

$100 enables a family peace of mind as their child attends Camp Riveredge in a fun, nurturing and safe environment.

$500 can change a child’s life at our residential camp, Camp Chief Hector YMCA.

$1,000 ensures a whole family can enjoy the lasting benefits of regular physical activity at YMCA Calgary for a full year.

$5,000 can teach over 70 children how to swim, ensuring they learn life skills and stay safe.

$10,000 would provide funds for a basketball program to run for a full year, helping children and youth lead a healthy life and make new friends

Gifts of $1,000 or more includes entry into our Chairman’s Round Table program and annual recognition within YMCA Calgary.

YMCA programs vary from community to community but one thing is constant: Every kid deserves a chance and everyone is welcome.

Our goal is only achievable with your generous support. Learn about the ways to donate.

A Celebration in Honour of Jim Gray

What a SPLASH!

On February 27, we hosted a pool party celebration in honour of long-time YMCA supporter and philanthropist Jim Gray. In a steadfast commitment to his own wellness, Jim completed over 300,000 lengths during 23 years to reach his goal of swimming across Canada!

This was a fun, energetic and unforgettable celebration of an extraordinary personal accomplishment by our friend, Jim Gray. In attendance were numerous strong supporters of Jim Gray including Mayor Naheed Nenshi, Premier Jim Prentice and Rick Hansen, the Man in Motion. In addition, well-known business executive types jumped in the pool to commemorate Jim’s swim!

At this inspiring event, a special announcement was made. YMCA Calgary’s downtown facility will soon have a new name as the Gray Family Eau Claire YMCA to celebrate his commitment to the community through his ongoing support of YMCA Calgary.

At the event, we officially launched a very important fundraising campaign to raise $3-million in Jim Gray’s honour. Together with his family, Jim is stepping forward in this way to help the YMCA grow our impact across the city. This growth will include three new centres of community being brought to life through the YMCA’s $30-million campaign, Power of Potential.

If you wish to contribute to the Power of Potential campaign, please click here. Your support is incredibly meaningful to Jim Gray, YMCA Calgary and the larger community.

thank you

Free YMCA Memberships to Grade 6 Students

Grade6Bball_478747809_small Grade6TweenHeart_467105659_small

YMCA Calgary and the Flames Foundation for Life are excited to announce a partnership to provide free YMCA memberships to all City of Calgary youth registered in Grade 6.

Grade 6 Membership Benefits:

  • Free membership for grade 6 school year
  • Access to all 5 city-wide YMCA Calgary locations
  • Access to no-cost programs such as Adventurers (leadership training including character development, communication, volunteerism, and fundraising) and Active Y Kids (physical activity, nutrition, and goal setting) and Flames Friday & Teen Night activities
  • Advanced registration and discounted fees for programs

Why Grade 6?

Studies have shown grade 6 is the age in which a child is faced with many decisions, often with two options – a healthy one and an unhealthy one.

At YMCA Calgary, we believe youth need a place to belong, to feel safe, and to explore and grow during the important developmental stage of their grade 6 year. We want to support our youth in this critical time as they:

  • age out of traditional care models
  • develop new interests
  • prepare for junior high

We intend to give grade 6 youth opportunities around leadership, recreation, and holistic health. Our ability to promote and build healthy relationships will help the youth

  • expand their pro-social networks
  • have opportunities to build healthy relationships with peers
  • establish relationships with positive, adult role models

Why is the Flames Foundation for Life partnering with the YMCA?

The Flames Foundation want to make Calgary the healthiest City in Canada and this is a step. We want youth to not only be active but to become educated in a healthy lifestyle. This includes teamwork, leadership, social skills, goal setting and positive decision making. We hope that this age group is exposed to elements of a healthy lifestyle and will have the education required to motivate healthy choices moving forward in their physical and mental development.

How does a Youth get a Grade 6 Membership?

Drop in to any YMCA Calgary location to complete a membership form for your youth (parent/guardian signature, proof of child’s grade required).

When does it start?

The Grade 6 Membership program will officially launch September 1, 2014. Students in grade 6 will be able to get a one year membership valid September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2015, with the program continuing for new grade 6 students in September 2015.

PReSchool’s Spin for Strong Kids Team!

Hi Everyone!

The Saddletowne Preschool Department put in a team for our Spin for Strong Kids Fundraiser on March 3, 2014. Our team was made up of instructors, directors, community members, and volunteers; if there was one word to describe our team it would have to be amazing!

We are sending out a sincere THANK YOU! to all our sponsors; especially the Karbani family, the Persaud family, the Elliot family, the Khamba family, and Sam Haneef (our youngest and best team member)!

The Saddletowne YMCA is truly a community; one that is made up of dedicated and kind members – it was a privilege to be able to participate in this event and spin along side people of such high caliber.

In total, the Preschool department alone raised $140.00!

Here is a great photo of some of our Preschool students cheering on our first group of spinning ladies!

LINC Spins for Strong Kids

On March 3rd, YMCA Calgary kicked off the 2014 Strong Kids campaign with the Spin for Strong Kids fundraiser. Stationary bikes were spinning like crazy in all of the branches, and both the North and South LINC students were part of the fun!

After learning about the Strong Kids Campaign in their classes, the LINC participants worked hard to raise money for the Spin-a-Thon.  Since joining the LINC program and the YMCA, many students seek out ways to give back to their community. The Spin for Strong Kids Event was the perfect opportunity to give back, get some exercise, and have fun with all of the staff, volunteers, members, and participants!

The money raised for the Strong Kids Campaign will help the children and youth in our community have positive experiences, build positive relationships, and develop leadership skills.  By helping to send a child to camp, learn to swim, or play basketball, the money raised will directly impact the future of our community in a positive way.  Way to go, LINC!

Thanks to everyone for riding  yesterday. Not only did LINC do a fantastic job raising money for Strong Kids, you also raised awareness with your encouragements and cheering during the event. Way to go!

YMCA Spin for Strong Kids – March 3

It’s time to kick off the 2014 YMCA Strong Kids Campaign! This year we’ll hold another signature cycling event to raise $1.5 million to benefit 25,000 local youth and children.

Spin for YMCA Strong Kids will be held on Monday, March 3! Sign up to ride a stationary bike for a 30-minute spot (or more) and start collecting pledges. Raising donations for YMCA Strong Kids means that children and youth have positive experiences, make healthy choices, feel connected with others and learn the skills required to become leaders.

Visit your YMCA branch to sign up. Don’t miss out on the fun!
