Quarter Way There!

Hi Calgary!

This is Sarah and Valeria, Calgary YMCA Youth Delegates for the YMCA Europe Festival of 2013!

As we are leaving for Prague in four short months, fundraising has really started to become  a priority in regards to preparation for our trip! Two weeks ago, we held a bake sale at Saddletowne YMCA during the Play It Forward Strong Kids Fundraiser. We were very successful, and, thanks to the generous donations of baked goods from YMCA staff, we were able to carry out our bake sale for three extra days!

Bake Sale at Saddletowne YMCA!

After two days at Saddletowne YMCA, and two days at Eau Claire YMCA, we managed to raise an incredible $1,132.16! We would like to thank all those who volunteered to bake for us, as well as those who purchased goods from our sale. Thanks to your support, we are now ¼ of the way to reaching our goal!

We are both extremely excited to be able to participate in the Prague Festival this year. In addition to being able to explore the city, we will be networking with over 10,000 other youth from around the world while we partake in workshops and trainings that will help expand our leadership skills. The festival itself has incorporated the themes of Peace, Democracy, Justice, Spirituality, and Healthy Living into the workshops. We are looking forward to being able to learn about different ways that we can incorporate global issues and social justice into our programs.

Recently, we came together to create a Workshop Proposal for the Healthy Living Day of the festival. We plan to discuss the importance of incorporating daily physical activity into YMCA programs, as well as into personal life styles. As a team, we will lead a group of around 40 other youth in playing popular Canadian games such as Chuck the Chicken and Bear Bug Frog (or for some, Giants Wizards Elves). Though we are still waiting for our approval notice, we are very eager to be able to share with others from around the world some of the games the Calgary YMCA enjoys playing with our participants.

As the Festival is fast approaching, we have been able to learn a little bit more about what will be offered to us throughout our time there. Some of the awesome activities included in the Festival on top of the workshops include things such as The Tower of Love, a Sand Beach, The Gate of Justice, and a Sand Arena Gaga Pit. If you’re confused as to what a Gaga Pit is, don’t worry; it took us a few Google Searches to be able to decipher exactly what it was used for (a game arena for Israeli Dodgeball).

We will share more information with you as we learn more about the festival and all of the exciting opportunities that it has to offer.

Everyone is welcome to attend our next fundraiser at Saddletowne YMCA on Friday April 5th at 4:30 until 9:00. We will be selling baking and freezies! Hope to see you all there!

-Sarah and Valeria

Leaving on a Jet plane…

We are pleased to announce the selection of Analu Lobos as our 2013 International Youth Intern to YMCA Ukraine!

Analu brings a wealth of YMCA Calgary and YMCA Ukraine experience. Analu has been a long term volunteer and employee with Eau Claire branch as well as Kids Club and has had the opportunity to work with YMCA Ukraine in 2009 visiting our partners in Lutsk, and again in 2012 working at the International camp.

Analu will begin her internship in May with some training in Calgary and then will be in Kiev, Ukraine from approximately mid May to mid November, supporting the local association in Kiev and helping them as they reach out to youth and build healthy communities in the capital of Ukraine. This trip is part of our Global Partnerships follow the link for more information about YMCA Calgary’s Global Initiatives and how you can be involved as well.

Note: This International Youth Internship Project is undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

YMCA Calgary Going Global

YMCA Calgary is part of a global movement of YMCA’s in approximately 120 countries. Through the Global Initiatives department YMCA Calgary is able to develop a global perspective in the members and participants of our programs and services, while supporting the global movement of YMCAs. The Global Initiatives department has a number of strategies:

YMCA Global Partners

YMCAs build strong kids, strong families and strong communities not only in Calgary, but also in more than 120 countries around the world. Partnerships promote sharing of knowledge and resources with YMCAs in other parts of the globe and provide opportunity to support local community development work abroad. Through exchanges, staff and volunteers from both associations learn from each other’s strengths and benefit from exposure to new cultures/perspectives. YMCA Calgary currently partners with YMCA Ukraine and YMCA Bogota, Colombia

YMCA Global Peacebuilders

YMCA believes peace is more than the absence of war. It requires the presence of something – the recognition of basic human rights and the provision of basic human needs. Since 1984, YMCAs across Canada have spent the third week in November organizing special activities to engage children, youth and adults in exploring peace from local and global perspectives. Annually, YMCA Peace Week brings Associations together with international partner YMCAs and hundreds of school and community partners in a week long event that highlights our common interest in creating a more just and peaceful world.

YMCA Global Experiences

To further support our Global Partnerships YMCA Calgary sponsors exchanges between Calgary and our partners in Ukraine and Bogota. Such exchanges are meant to benifit both YMCA’s. Teaching all of us new ways to engage youth and build healthy communities.

 YMCA Global Opportunities to Give

Through YMCA Calgary’s Strong Kids campaign, donors can designate support to one of our Global Partners. Another choice is to support our Emergency Responce fund which provides support for YMCA’s who request emergency relief.

For more information contact the Assistant General Manager of Community Branch at 403 537-1716.

YMCA youth headed to Europe!

Did you know that the YMCA Calgary has an International Department?  YMCA Calgary is part of a global movement of YMCAs in more than 125 countries. Through our International department, we are given an opportunity to help create a world where all can experience social justice.

This year our YMCA has been invited to participate in the YMCA Europe Festival. In addition to Danielle Phillips and Selena Gignac (YMCA Calgary Change Agents), we will also be attending the Festival.

We are Valeria and Sarah, and we are this year’s Calgary Youth Delegates for the YMCA Europe Festival.

We both work with YMCA Community Outreach. Valeria works at O.S. Geiger Elementary School as an Assistant Coordinator at the YMCA School Support Program. Sarah works as a YMCA Community Outreach Coordinator out of the North of McKnight Community Centre.

“I am looking forward to experiencing Prague’s cultures and learning about different backgrounds since people from around the world will be participating. I feel that this experience will help me develop my leadership skills.” – Valeria

“I am super excited for our trip! I’m looking forward to meeting people from different YMCA’s from across the world and getting to build relationships with all of them. I know that this opportunity is a once in a life time learning experience that will allow me to gain a better understanding of the global YMCA movement so as to help foster my role as a leader at home” – Sarah

The festival is taking place this August in Prague, Czech Republic; it has been held in Prague every five years since 2003.There will be approximately 10,000 youth from all over the world attending the festival this year. We will be participating in five days of intensive leadership training while we are there; the themes we will partake in include: “Colorful World” (Peace, Democracy, and Justice), “Healthy World” (Healthy Living), “Love 2 Live in Prague” (City Excursion), “Faithful World” (Inclusive Christianity), and “Our World” (Initiative, Impact, and Output).

We will be holding several fundraisers before we leave in order to raise some money to help cover our costs. We are so thankful and excited for this opportunity, and look forward to getting started on our adventure! Keep an eye out for future blog posts!

-Valeria Pardo and Sarah Finn

Our Visit to YMCA Partnership in Ukraine

YMCAs build strong kids, strong families and strong communities not only in Calgary, but also in more than 120 countries around the world. Partnerships promote sharing of knowledge and resources with YMCAs in other parts of the globe and provide opportunity to support local community development work abroad. Together with other YMCAs in Alberta, we have forged a partnership with YMCA Ukraine to promote mutual growth and learning.

Each September, YMCA Ukraine has a national meeting followed by a Field Group meeting. This year, representing Calgary and the Prairie YMCAs were YMCA Calgary CEO and President, Helene Weir, Senior VP, Asset & Facility Development, Nancy Farries, YMCA Calgary Board Vice Chair, Evan Hazell and CEO of Brandon YMCA, Lon Cullen.

The Field Group is a  group charted by YMCA Europe to provide support to YMCA Ukraine in it’s development. It is chaired by Jan Nissen a volunteer from Sweden and besides Calgary and the Prairie YMCA’s The Field Group attendance this year included YMCAs of Calgary, Brandon, Winston Salem, England, Spain, Sweden, Europe and Ukraine. Other partners not in attendance were Iceland, St Louis and Sarasota.
