Spring Demo Days at the Saddletowne YMCA

You’ve sprung ahead one hour and your winter jacket is hanging in the back of the closet, unused.  Spring is coming!

Get a head start on the new season by trying out one of the Saddletowne YMCA’s Adult Fitness classes.  March 28th through April 3rd, we will be offering FREE demo classes showcasing martial arts, group fitness, dance and more.  Click here for a complete schedule- we’ll see you then!

Tina Thrussel, Instructor, describes her experience with NIA:

The very first time I participated in a Nia class I cried… tears of joy!  I couldn’t help myself;  it just felt so good!  After years of feeling stiff and rigid, I felt at home in body, given permission to move my body’s way.  The music was uplifting and the movements were easy and fun.

This fusion fitness class seemed to be the answer to my prayers! The combination of the grace of the dance movements, the power of the martial arts and the relaxing stretching of yoga all felt so natural, so effortless… so freeing!!  I was hooked!

Shortly after that first class, I became a Nia teacher myself. I’ve been sharing the Joy of Movement through Nia for more than 6 years now and  I love Nia as much today as I did that first day.

Nia is:
Stress relief
A great workout
Dance-based, barefoot movement to uplifting music
Healing – on all levels!
A way to connect your mind, body and spirit
A place to feel the warmth of community
FUN!!

What can you expect from A Taste of Movement class?

Tina Thrussel, Instructor, describes A Taste of Movement…

If you find the idea of aerobic or dance classes a little intimidating, or if you’re just curious and want to try out different forms of movement, then A Taste of Movement is the class for you!  In this class we’ll explore the basics of a number of different movement modalities (those incorporated into Nia – Jazz Dance, Duncan Dance, Modern Dance, Tai Chi, Aikido, Tae Kwon Do, Yoga, the Alexander Technique and the Feldenkreis Method) in a light-hearted and fun way.

As an added bonus, you’ll learn the BrainDance – a series of movements that wire the central nervous system so that the brain can operate at its full potential.  BrainDance can be used as a warmup for sports, exercise or dance; before tests, performances and
presentations; after sitting for long periods of time, or during computer work and TV watching, for brain reorganization, recuperation and oxygenation, a centering body/brain warm-up, and to wake up or calm down.

Beginner and Advanced Level Zumba at Saddletowne

Beginning this Fall, the YMCA Saddletowne Fitness department will be offering beginner and advanced level Zumba classes Tuesday and Wednesdays evenings.  We’re sure you will find a convenient class that meets your experience level. 

Stop by Tuesday, September 4th at 7:30 pm for a beginner-level demo class.  We are offering an advanced-level demo class Wednesday, September 5th at 7:00 pm.  All demo classes offered next week are FREE for members and included in our non-member facility drop-in fee.  If you have any questions please contact Cathi Molson.

Labour Day TRX Cycle drop-in at Saddletowne

Stop by Studio A on our Strength and Conditioning floor Monday, September 3rd to try our new TRX Cycle class.  This 1 hour class will begin at 10:00 am.  The demo will be FREE for YMCA members and included in our non-member drop-in facility fee for this day.

Demo Days – AXE Capoeira at Shawnessy

Spring Demo Days are in full swing at all YMCA branches!
Tonight’s featured class at Shawnessy is Capoeira

Pronounced (kap-oh-air-ah), AXE Capoeira is a Brazilian mixed martial art developed 500 years ago by the slaves of Brazil who were forced to disguise their art form by incorporating elements of dance and acrobatics. Capoeira classes are for people of all ages and abilities and involve cardiovascular and muscular components as well as various forms of Brazilian music. A practice of martial arts, mixed with dance, core and muscle building.
