Help us Bring Holiday Cheer to a Family This Year

Every year approaching Christmas, YMCA Calgary helps many families from our YMCA programs by coming together to purchase gifts for families in need.

This week, you will see different displays pop up in each YMCA branch. The displays will contain details about each family (genders and ages) and a listing of their needs and suggested gift ideas.

Here’s how you can help:

1. Check the display for each family’s needs or gift suggestions
2. Take the tag(s) that describes the item you would like to donate.
3. Buy the gift(s).
4. Bring your tag and unwrapped item to Member Services.
5. YMCA staff will wrap and deliver gifts to the families in time for Christmas.

The families the YMCA helps are gathered from several Community YMCA Programs including YMAP (YMCA Achievement Program), Aboriginal Programs and Services, LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada), and Outreach.

Thanks very much for helping out in your community and let the spirit of giving begin!

It’s that time of year! Tis the season to celebrate the joy of giving from the heart. Bring warm holiday cheer to children and families through the Adopt a Family program.

Each winter YMCA Calgary runs an Adopt a Family program for families in our community who need a little extra help during the holidays. It is an opportunity for our staff, members, and participants to provide meaningful gifts to families in need.

Help provide much needed items to children and their families by picking up a gift or two.

How does Adopt a Family work?

The Adopt a Family displays in each YMCA Calgary location have gift tags that list the age, gender, family, and a suggested gift item.

All you need to do is:

  1. Take a tag (or two!) that describe the gift items you’d like to purchase
  2. Go shopping
  3. Bring the unwrapped gift and tag back to your YMCA location by noon on December 15
  4. YMCA staff will then wrap and deliver the presents just before Christmas

It’s that easy!

These donations bring smiles to the faces of parents and children, providing happy holiday memories. Thank you to everyone who has already donated!

Thank you for your generosity!

Our Sincere Thanks

Every year YMCA Calgary participates in the Adopt a Family program. This year, once again, your generosity astounded us.

Thank you for giving your time and care to purchasing gifts from families from our membership, childcare, and wider Calgary community. Our families received an abundance of gifts to put under their trees. From mittens and hats, winter coats and snowpants to grocery and movie theatre giftcards to art supplies and e-readers – children and parents unwrapped smiles and laughter this holiday season.

Your support filled needs in our community and brought joy to adults and kids alike. Thank you for playing a part in bringing holiday cheer to our neighbours and friends.

Adopt a Family Thank-you

I know Christmas is long over and it’s almost February, but let me remind you of Family 2 in our Adopt a Family Program here at Eau Claire. Family two was mom and dad and four boys. They boys are 16, 6, 2 and 6 months.  Mom and dad asked for  and received items like transit tickets, grocery gift cards and a garbage can for the kitchen. The oldest boy received gift cards, because when you’re 16 nothing is more cool than getting to spend your gift cards at the mall with your friends. The younger kids got clothes, a foamy for camping, craft supplies and diapers.

Today I  was reminded why we do what we do.  I received a thank-you letter in the mail from family 2. This is what the mom wrote:

Sorry Jenny it has taken so long to reply back over Christmas for the adopt a family program we received. We were so grateful for all you gave to us. You definitely made our Christmas complete.

My oldest son was very impressed by the gift cards especially. He was happy for all he received.

The two youngest boys are still too young enough to have known what was really going on. Yet I can assure you that tearing up all that wrapping paper was fun for them and made them laugh and smile.

Our six year old was so grateful for all he received. When he opened his blue foamy for camping he looked at it weird and said ‘what’s this for?’ I then told him ‘it’s so you no longer have to bring so many blankets to camp’ (to double them up as a foamy). He thought that was a good idea and then asked ‘so when are we going camping?’ and  I had to laugh as winter camping is quite cold. The 6 year old was very happy to have the honors of passing out gifts to us, to mommy and papa as we usually only worry about the kids as not enough money to get us gifts. We also appreciate the gift cards as it freed up some of our money that we would use otherwise on groceries etc to put forth on bills.

Again thanks so much for everything. So very much appreciated.

To all the members, volunteers and staff who gave gifts or time to the Adopt a Family Program, Thank-you.
