Share your interest in sports & recreation – become a MENTOR

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area, in partnership with YMCA Calgary, is starting something new this Fall – a Group Mentoring Program for male youth in grades 7 – 9. The group mentoring program will operate out of Saddletowne YMCA in the Genesis Centre of Community Wellness on Wednesday afternoons from 4 – 5:30 pm. Participants will have the opportunity to improve their health while making new friends in a fun, supportive environment.

Recruitment is currently underway for adults with an interest in sports and recreation who would like to share their knowledge and experience by becoming a mentor.  Mentoring is a relationship between a caring adult and a young person that provides support, friendship and guidance over time. Mentors volunteer their time because they want to make a lasting difference in the life of a young person. Research shows that youth who have been mentored are:

  • 2x more likely to have high levels of school commitment
  • 2x more likely to have high academic achievement

Additionally, 78% of recreation mentoring participants are playing new sports for the first time.
