Let the Y work out your summer job for you!

SPRING has barely sprung and plans are already afoot for summer camps at YMCA Calgary.

Vice president of operations Kelly Smith is busy planning for the summer fun ahead and this means recruiting some of the hundreds of young people needed to help staff the popular summer camps and summer programs.

Kelly explained why the Y is a good choice for a summer job: “It is a fun place. It is a great place to learn about yourself and develop personally.”

Day camp counsellors are need at all of the YMCA branches, Eau Claire, Saddletowne, Crowfoot, South Health Campus and Shawnessy.

Primarily they are in charge of children aged three to 15 years old so applicants would need to be a minimum of 17 years old.

Kelly continued: “We are looking for young people who are happy supervising children, planning, working with other staff and the kids and interacting with parents on a daily basis. There is quite a wide range of experience that they get while working for the Y and they are given training as well.”

Recruiters will be looking for applicants who have the ability to fit in and be responsible while supervising youngsters. People who are fun, outgoing and have a flexible approach to manage change.

Kelly added: “A good section of our summer staff are previous summer workers. We have a healthy mix of new and experienced and always try to place our experienced staff with the inexperienced staff.”

YMCA Calgary is also looking for lifeguards and swim instructors across all its branches but particularly in Saddletowne.
