Meet John Magat, Saddeltowne YMCA’s Youth Volunteer of the Year!


What is your volunteer role at the YMCA?
I am a youth coach for the following sports: badminton, basketball and soccer. On occasion I supervise the youth room. I usually have an hour shift a week, but I enjoy volunteering outside the schedule because I just love being with others and helping out. A shift for me is filled with having fun while helping others have fun themselves.

What do you like about volunteering at YMCA?
I am sociable person and I like being with people. I have been raised by my family to be helpful and to be a responsible contributor to the community.

How long have you been involved at the YMCA?
I have been a member and volunteer for the past three years.

Do you have why YMCA story?
I remember one time, I was playing table soccer with a group of children ages 7+. We were having so much fun that I didn’t realize somebody noticed how much fun I was having around these young ones. It was then that I was offered a volunteer position, I accepted immediately and till now I am enjoying this role.

Why are you a volunteer?
I want to contribute and bring back to the community.

What are your plans for the future?
I see myself as a successful professional in the future and YMCA has given me the opportunity to try my chosen career. This experience in the YMCA will definitely be an asset and a great reference for my credentials.
