It is with great pleasure to announce March MOM to an 86 year old athlete. He has taught me so much and is truly an inspiration not only to me, but to the many people he has come in contact with at the YMCA. His name is Hans Daniel and this is his story:
I always like distance liked sports; when in school I was not permitted to participate in 10 km race because I was not yet 18 years old. Thus I ran around our church many times until the 10 km distance was reached. Together with other boys of my class we cycled to Langenberg to learn hang gliding. This was fun but also work because the gliders had to be carried up the hill after every start. Things improved a lot when I volunteered to join the Luftwaffe. Near Hirzenhain a 2 km hill permitted flights of two hours and more. When an altitude of 1000 m, was reached we could fly along the Lahn river towards the Rhine river and return. Unfortunately I was called up a few days later. With the Luftwaffe any training with motor planes stopped because of shortage of fuel.
In Canada I joined a rowing club in Regina. We rowed in the morning and in the evening. Our coach watched us from, his motor boat traveling parallel to us. In July we travelled to Winnipeg for a regatta comprising Chicago Toronto, Hamilton, Halifax and others. I was rowing in a boat with four men for the weight class of up to 150 lbs. We had practiced a start with 1,4 half, ¾ , full. On the Red river there was room for 8 lanes. We were in the boat at 7 :00 but had to wait until noon for the start of the race. It was very hot and we did not get anything to eat or to drink. These were the rules. Finally we heard the starting gunshot. A minute later we saw all seven boats behind us We could not believe it. We rowed, rowed and rowed and heard the yelling of the coach on the deck. I punched Al Haverty in the back, the coach came with a bottle of German wine and I finished it alone.
After suffering a fall and sustaining a concussion 4 years ago which severely affected my balance, I was encouraged by my family to join the YMCA for some personal training classes to focus on this area. This involved machines which I had never seen before and opened up a whole new world of “sports” for me strengthening my muscles and my precarious balance. Later in September I thought I would benefit from a class setting involving resistance training with peers, where my input would be corrected and critiqued to find my optimal output. I have enjoyed the trainers, camaraderie and the program and feel it has helped and I look forward to training every day. My hope is to regain my balance so I can ski in the winter and do some 5km running races with my grandchildren.
The Y has been a wonderful new experience for me and I enjoy the workouts and enjoy the companionship of the staff and fellow members. The staff is always very friendly and helpful.
