Cathy Mallany: Shawnessy YMCA Adult Volunteer of the Year

Meet Cathy Mallany, Shawnessy YMCA’s Adult Volunteer of the Year!

What is your volunteer role at YMCA? What does a shift look like?
I volunteer in the Preschool Creative Kids class. It’s a fun class with 3-5 year olds. The preschool director runs the class, and myself and another volunteer help her out. We start with playing in the gym then going to the classroom and doing a craft, puzzles, and reading with the kids. I also help out at Member Services with filing a couple times a week.

What do you like about volunteering at YMCA?
I love helping Tracy, the Preschool Director in the Creative Kids class. We have so much fun with the kids! Mary, Rey, Julie and Dianne at Member Services, as well as the other staff and volunteers are just terrific!

Why did you choose to volunteer at YMCA ver another organization?
I retired from Nursing after 30 years. My son worked part-time at Member Services while he was in High School. He suggested I do some volunteering at the YMCA. I’m so glad he did!

How long have you been involved at YMCA?
I have been involved for 4 1/2 years as a volunteer.

Do you have a YMCA story?
I have met such wonderful people at the YMCA! I have gotten to know the staff and other volunteers over the years. I now consider many of them as friends.

How did you feel when you found out you were Volunteer of the Year?
To be honest, I felt very touched and honoured.

Why are you a volunteer?
I like the fact that every child has an opportunity at the YMCA. Also, the staff and volunteers are great to work with!
