International Volunteer Managers Day

Did you know YMCA Calgary has over 1,200 volunteers? They are the engine behind many aspects of the organization and we wouldn’t be where we are today without their hard-work and generosity!

The spirit of volunteerism at the YMCA is made possible by the many individuals who support, train, and lead volunteers. November 5th is ‘International Volunteer Managers Day’.  Find a moment to thank someone who is the power behind the many super hero volunteers in our city.

A special thanks to the YMCA Calgary Volunteer Coordinators for each YMCA location for all that you you do!

Air Quality Advisory Notice – YMCA Camps

UPDATE for Friday August 28

YMCA Camp Riveredge

Thank you for your ongoing understanding. The Air Quality Advisory remains poor for tomorrow, in the “High / Very High” range. On that basis we will repeat our contingency plan from Thursday.

The YMCA Camp Riveredge site will again remain closed on Friday 28th August and all  will continue to be provided at our Gray Family Eau Claire YMCA location.

All drop off and pick up locations and times will remain the same. If the Air Quality Index remains at six or below (Moderate) Campers will continue their activities both within the YMCA, and at the nearby Prince’s Island Park. Should the Index reach seven or above (High / Very High) the Campers will remain indoors, following a program similar in nature to our regular Daycamps. Using the Eau Claire YMCA as a temporary base for Riveredge allows us to respond more quickly to changing conditions.

Please continue to drop off and collect as normal, busses will be simply be redirected to Eau Claire. We understand the frustration and disappointment this continued closure will cause, but believe this remains the best solution for tomorrow.

YMCA Camp Riveredge has been providing an outdoor daycamp experience for over twenty years, and will continue to do so for many summers to come. We look forward to welcoming you back to Camp in July 2016!

UPDATE for Thursday, August 27:

YMCA CAMP RIVEREDGE

Due to the ongoing Air Quality Advisories in Calgary, YMCA Camp Riveredge will remain closed on Thursday August 27th, and all programming will continue to be provided at our Gray Family Eau Claire YMCA location (downtown).

All drop off and pick up locations and times will remain the same. If the Air Quality Index remains at six or below (Moderate), campers will continue their activities both within the YMCA, and at the nearby Prince’s Island Park. Should the Index reach seven or above (High / Very High) the Campers will remain indoors, following a program similar in nature to our regular Day Camps.

Using the Eau Claire YMCA as a temporary base for YMCA Camp Riveredge allows us to respond more quickly to changing conditions. A decision will be made at 2.30pm tomorrow (Thursday) as to Friday. Our hope is that conditions continue to improve, and we will be able to return to the Riveredge site.

Please continue to drop off and collect as normal and busses will be simply be redirected to Eau Claire YMCA. We understand the frustration and disappointment this continued closure will cause, but believe this remains the best solution for tomorrow.

YMCA Camp Riveredge has been providing an outdoor Day Camp experience for over twenty years, and will continue to do so for many summers to come. We look forward to welcoming you back to Camp in July 2016!

Thank you.

Update for Wednesday, August 26:

YMCA CAMP RIVEREDGE

Due to the continued forecast for poor air quality on Wednesday, we will be relocating our YMCA Camp Riveredge programs to the Gray Family Eau Claire YMCA located downtown. Bussing will be provided from other branches, and from the Riveredge site. Please drop off / pick up at your normal time and location – including campers usually dropped off at Camp Riveredge.

Update for Tuesday, August 25:

Given the current Air Quality Advisory, YMCA Calgary is taking the following actions:

YMCA Camp Riveredge will close this afternoon. Campers who have regular scheduled bussing are being returned to their home branch and will join regular YMCA day camp programs. Pick up will be at the normal time and location. The parents of campers dropped off on site at Camp Riveredge are being contacted with further information. Campers will remain in the sheltered areas until pick-up.

  • YMCA Daycamps will continue as normal. Campers will remain indoors for the remainder of the day.
  • Camp Chief Hector YMCA will continue to operate as normal, with programming adjusted to limit outdoor physical exertion. Those campers with preexisting conditions have been identified and are being monitored regularly.

We will continue to monitor the situation, and implement changes as required. The Air Quality forecast for Wednesday shows an improvement in conditions, and so it is likely that all programs, including YMCA Camp Riveredge, will return to normal.

Let’s Get Back on Track!

Stampede week is over, now what?

Stampede is a great time to get out and have a blast. The grounds are full of games, rides and best of all, tasty treats! With all the festivities and free pancake breakfasts, it can be hard to stick to a healthy diet, but that’s ok, it happens to the best of us 🙂

Now that Stampede is in the books for another year, it’s time to get back on track and start up on some healthy habits! Getting back on track doesn’t have to be overwhelming, just try to include small changes to your daily routine.

10 Ways to get back on track today

Try these 10 easy tips for finding a healthy balance in your daily routine:

-Try a short workout. It doesn’t have to be a long intense workout, even starting off with a 5-10 min workout is a good way to get back in the groove!

-Discover a new recipe. Try a new healthy recipe and enjoy a home cooked meal at home. Making your own food is often healthier and tastier than eating out.

-Drink plenty of water. Try to get the recommended 8 cups a day to see a difference!

-Track what you eat. It’s easy not to think about what you’re eating, but keep track of it and at the end of the day you’ll be able to see where you can make some improvements!

-Find a workout friend. Everything is more fun with a friend, even exercise! Working out with a friend keeps you motivated and pushes you to go further.

-Go for a walk. Every little step helps, especially when you work in an office where you sit for long stretches. It’s summer, so a walk in the park is always a nice way to spend your lunch.

-Stock your fridge with healthy food. If you fill your fridge and cupboards with healthy and delicious foods, you won’t be tempted to eat out.

-Do some yard work. Working in your garden or mowing the lawn is an easy way to burn calories and get some sunshine!

-Ride your bike. A bike ride can be as relaxing or invigorating as you want it to be. It’s a great low impact exercise and Calgary has tons of beautiful paths to ride and explore.

-Eat breakfast at home. Starting the day off right with a tasty and healthy breakfast can set the tone for your day. Try preparing something the night before to save you some time in your morning routine.

Take small steps at first, and build on them every day. Before you know it, you’ll be back on the track to a healthier you!
