RBC is investing $250,000 in YMCA Swim to Survive, a proven and effective drowning prevention program delivered at YMCA Calgary. As part of the establishment of the RBC Active for Life Fund, RBC’s gift will enable Saddletowne YMCA in the Genesis Centre for Community Wellness to teach more children in Calgary’s diverse northeast neighbourhoods fundamental, water-based skills to survive if they fall into water.
YMCA Calgary has recognized RBC for this commitment to community safety by naming the leisure pool at the Saddletowne YMCA as the RBC Leisure Pool.
Helene Weir, YMCA Calgary’s President and CEO, says RBC’s gift demonstrates a shared commitment to keeping children safe, especially those from new Canadian families who may be less familiar with deep water. “This gift could literally save lives,“ Weir says. “RBC is showing tremendous leadership in enabling the YMCA to help a generation of kids understand the importance of water safety.”
RBC’s donation will also allow YMCA to invest in support, training and programming around physical literacy for children.
“People, especially kids, deserve every opportunity to live healthy and active lives, and we believe that physical literacy is an important part of achieving that,” says Jeff Boyd, Regional President, RBC. “We’re humbled to have the opportunity to support Active for Life and help kids build the confidence they need to enjoy sports safely.”
Brigitte Edwards, General Manager, Saddletowne YMCA, sees an opportunity to affect thousands of Calgary kids positively. “If we can help kids learn these skills when they are young, there’s a much better chance they will remain physically active throughout their lives,” she explains.
“Thank you to RBC for trusting in the YMCA to deliver on our promise to the community,” says Ian Dundas, Co-Chair of the Power of Potential campaign cabinet. “This support will go a long way towards engaging more young people, helping them reach their full potential – the anchor purpose of our campaign.”

Strong Kids Campaign Success Story
YMCA Calgary is happy to announce that the 2015 YMCA Strong Kids Campaign raised $1.6 Million and enabled over 20,000 children to participate in YMCA activities! This goal would have never been met without the immense generosity and support of thousands of donors. Despite economic downturn across the city, our donors reached into their pockets and their hearts to support a great cause that supports so many children. Each and every one of our donors is directly pouring into the lives of Calgarian children and for that, we say, “Thank you!” Every single child who learned to swim, painted a picture, made a friend, wrote a poem, sunk their first basket or won their first race, they also say, “Thank you!” with a beaming smile across their face.
Each branch contributed greatly to reaching the financial goal of $1.6 Million and their contribution cannot go unnoticed! This program could never move forward without the continued support from all YMCA branches across the city.

It’s that time again – Mid January! Did you know, that mid-to-late January is called, “Blue Monday?” Yes! One reason is because it is during this time, that we start to fail, or drop our New Year Resolution’s (NYR) after the short period of creating them. Here’s a few ways to assist you in maintaining those fitness goals and New Year’s Resolutions!
Choose an Obtainable/Realistic Goal: One step at a time. Don’t set yourself up to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger in a month, or the next top model. Firstly, that isn’t healthy and you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.
Break it down into small steps: Creating small goals throughout the month (Ex. running on the treadmill for 15 min. 3 times a week and making my way to running for 30 min. 3 times a week until the end of February) makes a much bigger difference in accomplishing your goals.
Tell/ask friend’s/family regarding your fitness goals: The great thing about telling someone about your fitness goals is you then have someone to be accountable to. Next time they see you, a simple, “Hey, did you workout this week? How’s the progress?” can greatly help in motivating you to keep at your goals. Personally, I know that when I have a major goal, I tell my close friends and family so they can help me stay on track as well as give me incentive to do better.
Write them down, display them: To help in motivating you to keep at it’ during this year, try writing your resolutions and goals down where you can see them. For example, the fridgerator, the pantry where the chocolates are… (haha), in your vehicle, etc. I find that material objects I use daily such as my laptop, and cell phone are great places to create a ‘note’ so it will stay in the back of my mind throughout the day.
Don’t be too hard on yourself, we all fall: It’s okay to slip-up and make a mistake. We all do! In Batman Begins, Thomas Wayne (Bruce’s father) tells him: “And why do we fall, Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.” So don’t be too hard on yourself. As cliché as it sounds, Never give up! It’s okay to admit we need assistance or help. The staff at the YMCA will always be ready to assist you in attaining your fitness goals!
Reward Yourself: After setting those little goals for yourself, it’s good to reward yourself after every ‘milestone’. Treat yourself that white chocolate raspberry Crème brûlée you’ve been drooling over! Buy yourself those new sneakers. When you work hard, you deserve it!
When it comes to health and safety, some of the first things that come to most people’s minds are aspects related to the medical industry or accident prevention in the workplace.
But what does health and safety mean at YMCA Calgary? First and foremost, YMCA Calgary is committed to an incident- and injury-free environment for our members, participants, volunteers and staff and this is a high priority in our day-to-day plans and activities. And YMCA Calgary is proactive to ensure this happens.
Staff and Volunteers
All staff and volunteers are required to take annual health and safety training and key personnel are certified in First Aid and CPR.
Help at the Push of a Button
Rest assured as each of our buildings are equipped with safety alarm buttons in activity areas. Should a medical or safety issue arise, immediately press the button and trained staff will respond accordingly.
Keep it Clean
On the weight floor and cardio areas, there are new cleaning products provided. When finished your workout, please take a minute to spray and wipe down the equipment you used. This simple measure is a courtesy to other users and helps prevent the spread of germs.
Lend a Hand
Proper hand washing is such an important way to stem the spread of infection and illness. Here are some great recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
All of our locations have automatic external defibrillators and several first aid kits in various areas. Staff and volunteers are trained to use them should an emergency arise.
Fire Alarms and Other Emergencies
In the event of a fire, please stop all activity and take direction from staff and/or volunteers. In the case of a suspected lost child scenario, please assist staff and volunteers as directed.
Health and Wellness
We invite you to consider the wide range of programming available for children, youth and adults. All are intended to support development of individuals in spirit, mind and body. Please browse our online program guides.

Help us Bring Holiday Cheer to a Family This Year
Every year approaching Christmas, YMCA Calgary helps many families from our YMCA programs by coming together to purchase gifts for families in need.
This week, you will see different displays pop up in each YMCA branch. The displays will contain details about each family (genders and ages) and a listing of their needs and suggested gift ideas.
Here’s how you can help:
1. Check the display for each family’s needs or gift suggestions
2. Take the tag(s) that describes the item you would like to donate.
3. Buy the gift(s).
4. Bring your tag and unwrapped item to Member Services.
5. YMCA staff will wrap and deliver gifts to the families in time for Christmas.
The families the YMCA helps are gathered from several Community YMCA Programs including YMAP (YMCA Achievement Program), Aboriginal Programs and Services, LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada), and Outreach.

YMAP: YMCA Achievement Program
YMAP works with over 320 high school youth and young adults each year who are new to Canada. These youth are refugees, immigrants, international students and second generation Canadians from over 50 different countries.
We engage these youth through weekly after-school sessions and special events. YMAP youth have the opportunity to develop in all areas essential to a positive and healthy integration into Canada while maintaining and celebrating their culture of origin. They also are engaged in community work through volunteer and fundraising projects throughout the city.

Calgary, Alberta (November 25, 2015) –– YMCA Calgary is pleased to announce Helene Weir, President and CEO, YMCA Calgary has been named a Women’s Executive Network (WXN) 2015 Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award Winner.
Launched in 2003, the Top 100 Awards celebrate the incredible accomplishments of Canada’s top female executive talent as well as their organizations and networks. Ms. Weir, who is included in WXN 2015 Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 will be honoured during a gala celebration at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on November 26.
