Camp Chief Hector YMCA and Canadian Rockies Public Schools are pleased to announce the second year of EQUINE LEADERSHIP 15; a three-credit course.
This exciting course combines leadership with horsemanship. Students will earn three Alberta High School credits for completing this experiential education program. Equine Leadership 15 is an engaging and dynamic opportunity for students to learn more about themselves, equine practices, the Alberta landscape and ecology, and local history through applied horsemanship and riding, leadership skill development, and team building.
This four day program provides students with practical learning opportunities in horsemanship and riding skills, horse behaviour and herd dynamics, equine care practices, safety awareness and hazard mitigation, ethics and ecological impact of Leave No Trace, and the historical significance of horses in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
All learning activities and after-learning activity time are supervised by male and female YMCA staff and teachers.
Learning activities are scheduled between 7:00am and 9:30pm with lights-out at 10:30 pm. Fees include shared, dormitory-style accommodations, instruction and meals. Participant families are responsible for transportation to and from Camp Chief Hector YMCA.

Tis the season to be jolly! This year, support Melcor YMCA youth leadership programs with your Christmas tree purchase! Bring the spirit home by purchasing a YMCA Christmas Tree. Trees are available at the Melcor YMCA in Crowfoot. You may purchase a tree for $5.00 per foot. We will be selling trees from now and until we sell out!
Stop by the front desk for more information, call 403-547-6576 or look for the YMCA Leadership groups awaiting your donation in our lobby after school hours. Follow the Christmas music to find them! The proceeds from your purchase will allow our YMCA leaders to attend the Western Canadian Leadership Conference held in February and fund the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign! These leaders meet every week to gain skills and to give back within their communities!
We thank you for your generous support and we hope you find your perfect tree to light up your home during the holiday season!

My first day on the job this past week provided me with an opportunity to tour the Quarry Park Child Development Center. While still under construction it is clear to see each of the spaces and to imagine children at play. I was able to see the kitchen which will provide the children’s lunches and snack times. There is an indoor gym for children to experience indoor gross-motor play.
A large outdoor play area will feature landscaping, grass and a discovery trail for stroller walks and bike riding.
One feature I particularly enjoyed seeing was the Experience Studio (Below: Caryl Broen & Trudy Halvorsen in the Experience Studio). This space will provide lots of unique experiences to support YMCA Playing to Learn curriculum. I could really envision children baking their own cookies or working on a science project there.
It was great to see the centre as we prepare to welcome children to the facility mid August.
We are excited to also be preparing to open a second Child Development Centre in the Quarry Park community. Located in the Remington YMCA, this centre is scheduled to open early July. Like the Quarry Park Child Development Centre, the childcare centre will feature the YMCA Playing to Learn curriculum. Children will be able to experience time in the on-site Calgary Public Library and utilize YMCA facilities including the pool and active play areas.

Spring is just around the corner and our excitement for opening two new child development centres this summer is growing just as fast as the tulips sitting on my mother-in-laws windowsill!
During February and March we enjoyed meeting many new families as they participated in the three open houses we hosted at the Shawnessy YMCA Child Development Centre. It was great fun to showcase our play-based learning curriculum as well as floor plans for the child development centres as well as the Remington YMCA also scheduled to open this summer.
We have certainly seen registration pick up these past few weeks and encourage families who have not yet contacted us to do so as soon as possible – we currently have a waiting list for infant spaces with toddler and preschool spaces not far behind. Some of this may be due to a new addition to the billboard signage located at the Quarry Park Child Development Centre location – check out the familiar burgundy circle with the Y logo!
As we get closer to opening we will be scheduling open houses at the new facilities as well as orientation nights for registered families.
