Help us Bring Holiday Cheer to a Family This Year

Every year approaching Christmas, YMCA Calgary helps many families from our YMCA programs by coming together to purchase gifts for families in need.

This week, you will see different displays pop up in each YMCA branch. The displays will contain details about each family (genders and ages) and a listing of their needs and suggested gift ideas.

Here’s how you can help:

1. Check the display for each family’s needs or gift suggestions
2. Take the tag(s) that describes the item you would like to donate.
3. Buy the gift(s).
4. Bring your tag and unwrapped item to Member Services.
5. YMCA staff will wrap and deliver gifts to the families in time for Christmas.

The families the YMCA helps are gathered from several Community YMCA Programs including YMAP (YMCA Achievement Program), Aboriginal Programs and Services, LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada), and Outreach.

Thanks very much for helping out in your community and let the spirit of giving begin!

For more information or to donate, contact your YMCA Branch today.

*Please note: All 2015 Adopt a Family families have been selected.

YMAP Fosters Healthy Integration

YMAP in the News

Some of our amazing YMAP participants were recently featured on Global News!

Check out the clip here.

YMAP March Event

YMAP: YMCA Achievement Program

YMAP works with over 320 high school youth and young adults each year who are new to Canada. These youth are refugees, immigrants, international students and second generation Canadians from over 50 different countries.

We engage these youth through weekly after-school sessions and special events. YMAP youth have the opportunity to develop in all areas essential to a positive and healthy integration into Canada while maintaining and celebrating their culture of origin. They also are engaged in community work through volunteer and fundraising projects throughout the city.

LINC Builds Peaceful Communities

Peace TreeEvery November, YMCA LINC classes observe Peace Week. This is an opportunity to explore and celebrate peace in our communities, both on a local and a global scale. With students from nearly 40 different countries, the LINC program offers unique and creative perspectives on the meaning of peace and the power of the individual to create positive change for tomorrow.

Last week, South LINC students and teachers held a special event with the theme of “Building Community, Acting for Peace”. The students explored this theme by participating in a variety of creative activities, such as making origami peace doves and learning how to find inner peace in a meditation workshop. Students also practiced using peaceful vocabulary words, explored how both positive and negative words can affect others, and learned about other cultures through a musical activity. The grand finale, a peaceful flash mob set to John Lennon’s “Imagine”, surprised the passers-by in the Shawnessy YMCA lobby. After the flash mob dispersed, a “Peace Tower” remained in the lobby as a lovely reminder of the day’s events.

Meanwhile, the North LINC students and teachers were hard at work sorting donations at their event, which focused on giving back to the community. Three classrooms were set up to collect and sort items for the Calgary Food Bank, the Women in Need Society, and other local organizations. The students did an excellent job preparing for this by researching what items were needed, and then making signs and posters to explain what to bring to donate (healthy non-perishables), and what to leave at home (sugary snacks and perishable items). Throughout the evening, students wrote message of peace on the “Peace Giving Tree”, and worked together to organize and sort the donations. By the end of the evening, there were three very neatly organized classrooms, completely full of gently used winter clothing, children’s toys, items for newborn babies, and non-perishable donations for the food bank.

It is truly amazing to see how focusing on acts of peace in our community can have such an immediate impact.

Great job, everyone!

Recycling for Strong Kids

Good Things Happen at the YMCA

In these challenging times there are some happy moments. The Housekeeping team at the Gray Family Eau Claire YMCA recently started an initiative to centrally store and collect empty bottles for the YMCA Strong Kids campaign.

The value of the first cheque to Strong Kids was $340.00 and the 2nd  pick-up is scheduled before the end of the year. That’s enough to send a child to camp and have the experience of a lifetime, or teach the essential life skill of swimming to a family new to our city!

We’re so proud of our staff for taking on this wonderful initiative!

Strong Kids

The following  team members  participated in the first collection:

Paramjit Darrar, Nirpal Shergill, Kamla Sharma, Monohar Nirwal, Genina Yepes, Jasvir Dhanoa, Roop Sidhu, Major Gill, Gurmit Singh and Sukhdev Bains.

About YMCA Strong Kids

Create a positive Child Minding experience for you and your child

When the needs of a child guide parents and caregivers in their actions, it helps children to have positive experiences that support them in their growth and development.

YMCA Calgary aims to provide your child with a safe, caring and stimulating environment – one filled with lots of opportunities for them to explore and learn as they play.

We know that it is very important to have open, positive relationships between parents and caregivers so communication is effective. This allows children to make connections between their home and the broader community while gaining an understanding that the adults in their life are working together… for them!

YMCA Child Minding areas are places children become very familiar with as they gain confidence for being away from their parent. In the Child Minding area they develop relationships of their own with other children as well as the staff and volunteer caregivers. As a values based organization we pride ourselves on providing opportunities for children to learn about, and practice behaviours of, respect, responsibility, caring and honesty. In the child minding areas you can see this –

  • When children observe caregivers and parents warmly greeting and calmly speaking with one another
  • When check in and sign out processes are smooth and worry free for children, parents and caregivers
  • When children clean up the toy or piece of equipment they were playing with prior to leaving the area
  • When caregivers let the phone go to voice mail while they play and engage with children. Messages can be picked up in a few moments, a wonderful play moment shouldn’t be interrupted
  • When a parent or caregiver voices a concern to the other adult and they hear each other out prior to determining how they can best work together to support the child

YMCA staff and volunteers want all children to feel comfortable and happy within the Child Minding area. They truly enjoy working with the children and are committed to providing them with the care and attention they need.

International Volunteer Managers Day

Did you know YMCA Calgary has over 1,200 volunteers? They are the engine behind many aspects of the organization and we wouldn’t be where we are today without their hard-work and generosity!

The spirit of volunteerism at the YMCA is made possible by the many individuals who support, train, and lead volunteers. November 5th is ‘International Volunteer Managers Day’.  Find a moment to thank someone who is the power behind the many super hero volunteers in our city.

A special thanks to the YMCA Calgary Volunteer Coordinators for each YMCA location for all that you you do!
