Carli Tyson: Eau Claire YMCA Adult Volunteer of the Year

Meet Carli Tyson, Eau Claire YMCA’s Adult Volunteer of the Year!

What is your volunteer role at YMCA?
I coach one of our Masters Swim Teams. Our practices start at 5:15PM. I try to get there, about 5 to 10 min early to get warm-up and the main workout up on the board. I will then let swimmers work through warm-up individually and try to give them as many tips as I can. Between 5:35PM & 5:40PM I stop the group and explain the main set. At that point each lane works through the set together. We also compete at local & national Masters meets so on my own time I will register swimmers with Swim Alberta and enter them in the meets they want to compete at.

What do you like about volunteering at YMCA?
I have spent my life involved in athletics and know I am at my happiest when I’m active. The YMCA promotes healthy & active lifestyles for all makes and models of people and I love that a former Olympian could be running or swimming beside an individual who is just entering into an active lifestyle. In addition, I have met some of my closest friends and co-workers through programs at the Y. I’m quite sure I would not be working for the company I am if it weren’t for being a member of the YMCA. Because of all that the YMCA has given me, volunteering is an easy way to give back.

Why did you choose to volunteer at YMCA over another organization?
The YMCA gives so much to the community while promoting healthy & active lifestyles for all. Given my passion for sport and activity, the YMCA was an easy choice to volunteer my time with.

How long have you been involved at the YMCA?
I joined the YMCA as a member in November, 2003 and began volunteering in April, 2007.

How did you feel when you found out you were Volunteer of the year?
I was shocked and honoured. There are so many wonderful volunteers at the YMCA, it seems crazy to me that I could be picked for this honour.

Do you have a YMCA story?
I guess my YMCA story would be how I ended up with my current employment. I met both the President & Vice President of the company I work for via the Thursday morning spin class and the evening masters group. If I had not been a member and participated in these classes, I would not have met Matt & Matt and would probably not be working for Palisade as a result.

Why are you a volunteer?
I have been very lucky in life, so if I can give a little of my time to ensure more funds can be allocated to those that need it, it’s the least I can do. In addition, I have always been in love with swimming, so I will take any opportunity to try to pass on my passion to others.
