Camp Chief Hector’s Community Garden

During the summer of 2011, Camp Chief Hector YMCA campers and counselors created a community garden and herb spiral to help teach children the importance of knowing where food comes from, what it contains and how to care for it. They grew tomatoes, peas, beans, lettuce, carrots, radishes, kale and a variety of herbs.  Aside from the multiple educational benefits, they were able to supplement the site’s food supply and save money.

Opportunities for environmental learning and sustainability continue in 2012 with the addition of a small greenhouse for seedlings.
