Bryan Hickey: South Health Campus YMCA Adult Volunteer of the Year

Meet Bryan Hickey, South Health Campus YMCA’s Adult Volunteer of the Year!

What is your volunteer role at YMCA?
Adult fitness class instructor for muscle works, cross training and core & strength.

How long have you been involved at YMCA and in what capacity?
I’ve been a member of the YMCA since 2012 and began volunteering in March 2014.

What do you like about volunteering at YMCA?
I like the friendly atmosphere of the staff, members, volunteers and participants. The helpful approach that is felt at the YMCA is very critical for people to feel supported and encouraged in their fitness goals and journey. I am happy to be a part of creating the supportive atmosphere that is a part of the organization.

Why did you choose to volunteer at YMCA over another organization?
I work full-time at the South Health Campus and was utilizing the YMCA facilities there twice or more times daily while training for a bodybuilding and men’s physique competition. I appreciated the supportive relationships I was developing at the YMCA and wanted to have that same impact on other members.
Why are you a volunteer?
I believe the success in the gym is directly related to the goals a person has and our willingness to do what it takes to accomplish these goals. We should all have people in our lives that inspire us in our goals. As a volunteer fitness instructor, I am thrilled to be in a position to have an impact on those around me and to be a part of helping people journey towards their goals.

This is accomplished by designing the fitness class to be a safe, challenging, encouraging and rewarding experience. You will always have me participate in the class. I call it “feelin’ the love!” This gives me a realistic idea of the structure and intensity of the class because sometimes things play out differently than it looked like on paper.

Do you have a YMCA story?
As a member, I was training twice daily in preparation of a bodybuilding and men’s physique competition. This involved individual weight floor training as well as participating in the cross training adult fitness class.

After about a year of participating in the class, the instructor, who was also the fitness program director at the South Health Campus YMCA asked me if I ever considered teaching a class. I simply said “yes”.

The instructor had such a great approach to my response and made available the necessary and required training to become an instructor. I presently appreciate the growing relationships I have with a strong core of participants in each of the classes I instruct.
