Basketball – Early YMCA leaders also perfected modern teaching methods for swimming and lifesaving and invented new games.
For instance, in 1891, Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian YMCA Physical Director and
a teacher, invented basketball by hanging two peach baskets from the railing of the
gymnasium’s second level running track. While basketball evolved over the years,
12 of Naismith’s original 13 rules have remained intact to some degree.
