South YMCA Celebration
On Wednesday, September 1, 2010, a special family celebration was held in honour of the South YMCA. YMCA Board of Directors, members, media, volunteers, staff and Calgarians of all ages were in attendance to celebrate the long and rich history of this facility deeply embedded in surrounding communities.
“The South YMCA Celebration event pays tribute to the branch’s long-standing, rich relationship with nearby Calgary communities,” remarked Helene Weir, YMCA President and CEO. “Generations of Calgarians have learned about the importance of healthy living and community spirit at South YMCA. Closing the doors to this branch was an extremely difficult decision since the South YMCA has been a part of the YMCA family for so long and is very dear to many people.”
Opened in 1963, the South YMCA was the oldest of YMCA Calgary’s four health and wellness facilities. The decision to close the branch was made after findings showed the building needs approximately five million dollars of significant renovations and upgrades, and the potential for rebuilding has limitations such as inadequate parking and a utility right of way on the property. The branch has operated at a loss for over 20 years, and would need to more than triple its 1,500 membership base to cover operating costs.
YMCA Calgary will continue to run critical hours programs at schools and other community locations in the area and many members plan to utilize facilities and join programs at the nearby Shawnessy YMCA.
“YMCA Calgary strives to create a sense of community, and the staff, volunteers and members at the South YMCA have done a tremendous job over the last 47 years,” said Weir. “We thank each and every one of them for their dedication and hard work, as well as the support of people in nearby communities.”
