Peace building begins one step at a time with individuals and groups in our local community. Since 1991, YMCA Calgary has been recognizing peacemakers who inspire and affect the lives of others through their peaceful endeavours. The annual YMCA Calgary Peace Medals honour youth and adults from all walks of life who commit their time to advancing peace in their own communities or abroad.

Peace Medals History
Since 1981, YMCAs in 127 countries around the world have recognized YMCA Peace Day. YMCA Canada expanded on the initiative in 1984 by dedicating a full week to exploring peace from a personal, community and international perspective.
In 1987, YMCA Canada introduced the idea of the Peace Medallion to honour individuals or groups in their communities who, without any special resources, demonstrated in their lives and activities the values of peace and understanding. YMCA Calgary joined the Peace Medals project in 1991.
The YMCA Calgary Peace Medals continue to recognize the efforts of individuals, groups and youth in the categories of Local, International and Humanitarian Peace Initiatives.
