In 2005, YMCA Calgary embarked on its most ambitious fundraising campaign to date, The Growing Strong Together Community Campaign. The goal: to raise $10 million in support of YMCA Calgary’s development plan, which will help fund community programs, renew the
Eau Claire and Crowfoot facilities, revitalize Camp Chief Hector and build a new YMCA branch in northeast
Calgary.
Thanks to the efforts of many campaign volunteers and the generosity of donors, the $10-million mark was met, then exceeded in the spring of 2007. Efforts have turned to securing the remaining funds from various orders of government.
Money raised during the Growing Strong Together Community Campaign is already at work, ensuring that YMCA Calgary can effectively serve the community for years to come.
Here’s a look at the latest development plan update:

What’s next |
|
New northeast YMCA |
This facility will serve the diverse needs of 10,000 area children and families as a place where they can come to be healthy, to learn and to volunteer. |
All funding has been secured. The Calgary City Council has approved the concept plan and implementations strategy for the Northeast Centre of Community. The ground-breaking occurred in June 2009 |
Construction is underway and the facility is expected to open mid to late 2011. |
|
YMCA Camp Chief Hector |
Refurbishment of YMCA Calgary’s camping and outdoor education branch, where 13,000 children, youth and families experience personal growth and develop leadership skills each year. |
We have reinvested $3 million to purchase a new satellite camp, redevelop Hector Lodge, build a state-of-the-art climbing wall and continue upgrades to the water system. |
Upgrades to the water system continue. |
|
Community Programming |
Funding for YMCA Calgary community programs, which provide learning and recreation opportunities to 5,000 children, youth and families each year |
Over $1.1 million has been invested in the renewal and expansion signature community programs such as the YMCA Achievement Program (YMAP) and Aboriginal Programming. These programs provide opportunities to youth to help them succeed at school, at work, and in their communities.
Another important focus has been to solidify "continuum of service" for Community participants from kindergarten to Grade 12. This way, a child who attends a Grades 4-7 after-school literacy program can then access a youth leadership program at the junior-high school level. |
We will continue to renew these programs and seek out new funding partners.
Each year, 5,000 children, youth and families will reach their potential, make healthy choices and develop a better future for themselves. |
|
Renewed
Eau Claire and Crowfoot facilities |
Facility improvements to better serve the tens of thousands of Calgarians who use them each year. |
Renovations at the Eau Claire YMCA are complete. |
Eau Claire will have its grand reopening celebrations on May 1 and 2nd, 2009. |
|
Creating opportunities for all |
Funds to help provide financial assistance to the 16,000 children, youth and adults who require it each year. |
In 2009, we have raised over $770,000 (as of November 19, 2009) for our Strong Kids Campaign – ensuring all children and youth can come to the YMCA. |
In the face of increasing demand, a final push to surpass the $800,000 mark by year end and ensure our commitment to the principles of opportunity and accessibility will continue as they have since 1902. |
