YMCA 7th Generation (Y7G)
Y7G is a leadership development program for aboriginal youth in Grades 9 to 12 in the city of Calgary.
YMCA 7th Generation came to us in the form of a prophecy by respected Elders when the Europeans first came into contact with the indigenous people. The Elders declared that negative events would occur to the First Nations, but it would be the 7th generation that would rise up and regain their identity and help guide their people back to strength and wellness. The program combines this prophecy with the 7th Generation philosophy which states, decisions made TODAY must consider the 7 generations after them.
In the program, participants have the opportunity to partake in various leadership activities, such as; cultural teachings, training and workshops that will support the youth in becoming healthy leaders. The youth create and contribute to the curriculum with their experience and knowledge. The objective is to inspire self empowerment in today’s aboriginal youth, while embracing the Seven Sacred Teachings and the YMCA Four Core Values.
There is no fee to participate in Y7G. The program runs weekly throughout the school year, and new participant intake occurs each October and November.
