Immigrant Services

At YMCA, all people, regardless of race, age, gender, background or financial circumstance are welcome. Part of our commitment to helping strengthen foundation of community and providing equal access to all is working with newcomers to Canada—ensuring people have the tools and support systems in place to help them succeed.

YMCA Achievement Program (YMAP)

Immigrant youth in Calgary are at greater risk of not finishing high school than other youth. YMAP is a life skills, career exploration and leadership program for high school youth with an immigrant background. It is a YMCA stay-in-school initiative for participants ages 15 to 20. Participants receive the skills they need to succeed at school, work and in their communities. YMAP participants are 20% more likely to graduate from high school than other youth in Alberta. There is no fee to participate in this program. For more information, contact the YMAP Director at 403-241-4605.

YMCA Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)

YMCA Calgary offers English classes for newcomers to Canada. LINC helps immigrants and refugees have a smooth and successful transition into Canadian society and culture. Participants learn language skills so they can feel comfortable with the activities of daily Canadian life, become more employable and feel like they are welcome and belong. There is no fee to participate in this program. Click here to find out more about the LINC Program or contact the YMCA LINC Administrator at 403-537-2714.
